 NEWS AND UPDATE

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10

WATER WOES.  Yet another water issue has beset the clubhouse.  A leak resulted in a puddle that had to be mopped up by members when they arrived to bowl.  The water is now turned off and will remain so until a plumber has corrected the problem.  If you plan to bowl on Sunday or Monday, remember -- no water and no water closets!!!  Hopefully repairs will be made on Tuesday.

AGM.  More than forty attended the Annual General Meeting last Tuesday.  Items of interest included the election of officers and board members for the coming year.  The only position not filled in the nominating committee's slate was Vice-President.  Jack White was nominated from the floor and the complete list as ratified includes:

          President - Joyce Gammie
          Vice-President - Jack White
          Past-President - Kerry Davis
          Treasurer - Bruce Watson
          Secretary - Betty Locke
Board Members - Bev Myers, Judith Bulley, David Lovell, Doug Greene, Duncan Locke

The new board held its organizational meeting on October 9, and is not scheduled meet again until Thursday, January 14 at 1:00 p.m.

UNORGANIZED PLAY.   Since the season's official end, members have continued to play, either organizing matches themselves or turning up to play with other drop-ins.  Afternoons (1:00 p.m.) seem to be a popular time.  Such play may continue as long as the weather cooperates.  An announcement will be made should the greens no longer be usable.

DECALS.  Members who expressed interest in ordering decals for their bowls will be disappointed to learn that the many attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful.  We'll try again in the spring.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON.  This annual event will be at the Cowichan Valley Inn -- Friday, December 11 -- 11:30 until 2:00 -- $22 (cash bar).  Tickets are available from Joyce Gammie (246-2484) until the end of October, and after that from Ruth Davis (748-3316).

GAMES BOOK.  A motion by Irene White at the AGM (that a committee of 3 to 5 members-at-large be formed to produce a games book for the club.) was tabled for board consideration.  At the recent board meeting a committee -- consisting of Duncan Locke (chair), Betty Locke, Mark Trueman, Marilyn Boechler, and Irene White -- was established to this end.  The purpose of the games book is to have a record of the major tournaments and competitions sponsored by the club.  It will serve both as a source of information for members and a reference for those responsible for such events.  Meetings will begin in January and the committee will report to the board prior to the Spring General Meeting and to the membership at that time.

All club members are encouraged to contribute to this process by submitting comments and suggestions to Duncan Locke (748-6542 or duncanofduncan@shaw.ca).  (NOTE:  Duncan will be away all of November and December.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

MONDAY, OCTOBER 5

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.  Tomorrow (Tuesday, October 6) at 1:00 pm members will gather at the club for the AGM.  An important agenda item is the election of officers for the coming year.  Do plan to attend.  Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to vote for their choice for the Denny Baker Sportsmanship award.  Come prepared to name your choice for the member who, during the current season, has best promoted good sportsmanship and the well-being of the club and the membership.

CENTENNIAL PARK OFFICIAL OPENING.  Earlier in the day tomorrow, as well, at 10:00am is the official opening of the park as it has been reconfigured.  As part of that package, we have been invited to attend.  We can attend either as part of the audience; or, as someone has suggested, if it is a fine day some of us could be bowling and showing those in attendance what goes in behind our wire-mesh fence.

DIANA FRASER.  Many are still in shock over the sudden death of Diana.  She was so young in her demeanor, and so vibrant and vital in her involvement with the club.  She was all that a "good member" should be -- helpful, supportive, willing, and available.  We will miss her on the green, and we will miss her many contributions.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE.  Twenty-four CLBC members journeyed to Parksville where we attempted to restore our dignity after our defeat on our home green last year.  We succeeded!  It was a most enjoyable day, and likely a first for many of our players having to play most of the morning and part of the afternoon in the rain.  The hosting group was warm and friendly, and we hope they didn't let us win on purpose.

GREENS MAINTENANCE.   Did you ever wonder what happens when the greens are aerated?  Take a look at the photos (GALLERY) that Mike Hanson took at the recent aeration and sanding of the green.  The club has since purchased a sand spreader (which you will recognize in the photos).

OCTOBER BOWLING.  We seem to have missed a few days of play toward the end of the season, but as long as the weather holds we can continue to play.  The afternoons have been particularly pleasant since closing day.  One o'clock might be a good time to find others there to organize themselves for casual play.

SUNDAY FUN DAY CLOSING JITNEY.  More than forty people registered for closing day, last Sunday.  Following three games of "Kitty in the Middle" all enjoyed a dinner of chicken, rice, salad, and lemon pie.  It was a fun and festive way to end the season with such a good turnout, all dressed in black in respect for the sadness and solemnity of the day.

The first-place team, the runner-up, and the "far from first" teams were awarded prizes for their efforts.  The Saturday Lotto had been carried forward for several weeks and had accumulated to the point where it was divided, and three prizes were awarded.  The lottery for the day was also drawn.  One of the prizes was won by CLBC!

In the end, all left happy -- especially the winners!  Remember, you have to be there to be one of them!

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON.  This annual event will again be at the Cowichan Valley Inn -- Friday, December 11 -- 11:30 until 2:00 -- $22 (cash bar).  Tickets available at the Annual General Meeting.

MONDAY, AUGUST 31

SATURDAY PLAY.  For the fourth consecutive Saturday the lottery was not claimed.  Next Saturday's jackpot will be close to $100!  With only three more Saturdays scheduled, the pot could be huge, as it was last year, for the closing day Sunday Fun Day jitney (September 27).

Please note that next Saturday, September 5, the draw will revert to the spring format -- 11am start, play 8 ends, break for lunch, play 6 ends.

Last Saturday a straw vote was taken of those present and half wanted to change back and half wanted to continue the 10am start.  Because the result was so close, your games chair has decided to continue with the original plan for the 2009 season -- the 11am format.  The change to 10am was was a temporary measure to "beat the heat".  With that no longer a major concern, we will complete the season as originally planned.

This same format is planned for 2010, as well.  However, should a change be wanted by the general membership, such a proposal could be considered at the spring general meeting.

LABOUR DAY JITNEY.  Play will begin at 11am on Monday, September 7.  Details are on the poster on the activities board, along with the signup sheet.  Pre-registration is requested -- $3 for prizes, coffee and tea, and incidentals.  Also, start planning your contribution to the potluck lunch to be served half-way through.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE.  On Wednesday, September 16, twenty-four CLBC members will travel to Parksville to be guests of the bowling club there.  Our eight teams will attempt to redeem themselves for the ignominious defeat we suffered as hosts last year.  Sign up early.  Should the event be over-subscribed, a draw will be made to select the players who will form our teams.

SUNDAY FUN DAY.  The Yes, Dear tournament was a success, as usual, with Alan and Mildred Butler leading the pack by a wide margin.  Runners-up were Tom and Marilyn Clark.  Because the prize envelopes were not marked, the most-supportive team of Eric and Irene Smedley, by chance, drew the largest prize!  Congratulations to all!

NOVICE CHAMPIONS.  Last week 13 novices duked it out for the novice championship trophies.  Of the eight women competing, four qualified for the playoffs in which Janet Gardner defeated Betty Lawes and Pat Unger defeated Penny Irvine.  In the final both were winners, in a sense, in that Janet is the club champion but Pat will represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs.  (Janet has a prior commitment at that time.)

The round robin played by the five men resulted in two with perfect records meeting in the final round.  In that match Bill Cleary won over Bruce Watson.  Spectators witnessed excellent bowling by all participants in both tournaments.  We are fortunate to have so many skilled new players.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES.  The men won again.  It was a beautiful day for bowls and all enjoyed being there, judging by the raucous sounds and laughter.  Kissing Jack and Kitty was a popular pursuit.  Each time the jack/kitty was touched the pendant went to that player.  The reward for having it at the end of play was a complimentary beverage for the male and female players possessing it, both at the lunch break and at the end of play.  Is it fair that Mike Hanson won twice?

HIREN BHARTU SEMINAR.  Hiren is ranked fifth in the entire world!  We feel honoured that he spent almost all of last Friday sharing his expertise with about thirty of our members.  Both experienced and new bowlers learned much from his presentation and demonstration.  Thanks to Gord and Trudy Fall who organized and provided snacks for this event.

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY LEAGUES.  Tuesday Pairs play is now complete for the season with the Team McCoy/Grainger (Carol and Reg) winning the spring section and Team Forster/Liddell (Vic and Martin) winning the summer section.  Well done!

Thursday play will end this week, by which time all re-scheduled games must be played.  A winner will then be announced!

PULLED PORK.  Many players in the battle of the sexes commented favourably on the pulled pork that was served at lunch.  The recipe is included below for all who requested it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

SATURDAY, AUGUST 15

THURSDAY EVENING SINGLES.  Play was cancelled this week due a heavy downpour of rain just before starting time.  We have added September 3 to the schedule to make up for it.  Players, however, may wish to play the match before then, as a re-scheduled game.  All results must be reported by the end of play on September 3.

ANOTHER CLUB CHAMPION.  Following round robin play last Tuesday and Wednesday, four players advanced to the semi-finals, wherein Gord Fall and Ross Bulley advanced to the finals by defeating Tommy Traynor and Tom Slemko.  The final match went right to the bell, with Ross being the winner.  Congratulations to him and to all the players who treated the gallery to many excellent matches.

YES, DEAR!  Sunday Fun Day's Yes, Dear! tournament filled up very quickly -- with several teams on the waiting list.  Play begins at 3pm tomorrow with three six-end games of Australian Pairs.  Happy hour will follow with players sharing finger foods and bringing beverages of choice or purchasing in the clubhouse.

SATURDAY.  This morning we had a huge gathering for morning play.  Five rinks of triples and one of pairs enjoyed most comfortable weather conditions.  The lottery, however, was not claimed; so next Saturday it could be close to seventy dollars!  Prior to the start of play, David Lovell presented a one thousand dollar cheque to president, Kerry Davis.  It was the grant from Shell Oil which we qualified for by David being a former Shell employee.  Again, we express appreciation to Shell AND the club members who re-furbished the benches.  Don't they look great?

BOWLS CANADA.  Next Wednesday is a big day for many of our members, when they will attend the national lawn bowls championship tournament at Juan de Fuca as flippers (scoreboard keepers) and markers (for singles matches).  About thirty CLBC members have volunteered.  Thanks, as well, to those members who baked cookies to nourish the players attending from all over Canada.

NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY.  Novices will play off for the right to represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs tournament in Victoria later in September.  Who will join Hazel Grant and Ross Bulley for this distinction?  Plan to watch men and women novices in this endeavor on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday, August 25.  (Note:  Markers will be needed for this event.  Please let Duncan know if you are able to help.)

NO GIRLS ALLOWED!  Male members only are invited to participate in a one-day, men only, pairs/singles tournament on Sunday, August 30 beginning at 9am and lasting through the afternoon.  Entries must be by pairs teams only -- no solo entries -- and only the first eight teams will be accepted. The $6/person registration will cover lunch and prizes.  Sign-up begins Monday morning, August 17 at open bowls.  So team up with a buddy and enjoy the surprise format that this tournament offers!

--------------------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY, AUGUST 7

BENCHES.  Thanks to two days' hard work by David, Dave, Dave, and Doug (Lovell, Collett, Gardner, and Greene), our benches have been refurbished.  The chipped, painted two-by-fours have been replaced by treated cedar which will weather and age naturally and NEVER need painting.  Thanks guys!  They are beautiful!  (The cost of the cedar was covered, for the most part,  by a community grant from Shell oil -- thanks to David Lovell's application.  Sharon Winship also had an "in" for a reduced cost for the cedar -- merci, to her, as well.)

BC DAY JITNEY.  Open bowling which replaced the cancelled BC Day Jitney was a great success!  When the heat that caused many not to register dissipated, a good turnout showed up to enjoy bowling in moderate temperatures.  Many stayed afterward for lunch, as well.

SATURDAY.  The lottery, in excess of one hundred dollars, was won on August 1 by Betty James.  The new jackpot begun on the 8th was not claimed and will be carried over to next Saturday.

WOMEN'S PLAY.   Betty Locke, Women's Games Chair, has provided the following:

WOMEN'S SINGLES.  "CLBC has determined its Ladies' Singles Champion.  On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week five women competed in a Round Robin consisting of four games. The clear winner was Hazel Grant who won all of her matches. Hazel will represent the club at the Champ of Champs later this year in Victoria. Other players included, Betty James, Betty Locke, Janet Gardner and Litza Slemko."  (BL)

WOMEN'S DAY PLAY.  "Women's Day had a special format this past Thursday, in which 24 members took part in a Quaddie tournament. Six teams were drawn consisting of four members who played a series of short games in various formats -- fours, pairs, triples, and singles. Lots of laughter and conviviality ensued. When all games were over at noon, the team consisting of Betty Locke, Sheila Wethered, Frankie Montgomery and Pat Unger were declared the winners. Players then enjoyed a delicious pot luck lunch. We thank Duncan Locke, men’s games chair for his fine efforts in planning and coordinating this event." (BL)

DECALS FOR BOWLS.  A sign-up sheet to order decals for your bowls is posted on the activities board.  Many players like the easy, personalized identification they provide.  If enough are interested, an order will be placed, prior to which the price will be known and a choice of colours will be available.

MEN'S PLAY.  Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (August 11&12) interested players will compete for the club championship and the right to represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs in September.  Open play will not be available for these mornings.

YES, DEAR!  Registration is now open for Sunday Fun Day's Yes, Dear! event on Sunday, August 16.  Information is on the activities board.  The main requirement is that  pairs entries must be couples -- either husband and wife or singles in mixed pairs.  If the tournament is filled, add your entry beyond the sixteen maximum, in case of cancellation.

OTHER AUGUST EVENTS.  August 24 and 25 are the dates for the novice club championship competition (both men and women).  Novices will be contacted directly with information.

August 26 is the annual Battle of the Sexes tournament.  This year the men will host the women.

-----------------------------------------------------

THURSDAY, JULY 30

Things are heating up on our green ... and it's not just the weather.  This week we held the first of our annual club championship playoffs -- the 70+ competition.  Next week is the Women's Singles Tournament (sign-up sheet on the activities board).  The following week is the Men's Singles Tournament and at the end of the month, August 24 and 25, our men's and women's novice champions will be determined.  Watch the board for details of these events.  Too often members are reluctant to participate because they don't think they are good enough.  Remember that experience is the best teacher -- competing is big step toward becoming "good enough"!

We have a new activities board located on the wall to the right of the women's washroom.  It replaces the wobbly tripod board which will be stored for use during tournaments.  Thank you, Ross Bulley, for making it happen!

BC DAY JITNEY.  Because so few have signed up for the jitney next Monday (August 3), it has been cancelled.  Instead, anyone interested in showing up to play may do so at 10am.  Bring a bag lunch for after.  No charge! No prizes! No catered lunch!

MARKERS.  Members interested in learning about the role of markers in singles play met with Ross Bulley last Monday.  We appreciate the willingness of members not participating in the event to provide this service.  It speeds up play and conserves the players' energy.  I especially want to thank those who responded to my call for help for Tuesday and Wednesday.  I had completely forgotten to arrange for markers for the 70+ tournament, and my plea was answered with enough markers for all six draws and the playoff.  Markers will be needed for the women's, men's, and novices' tournaments; so please let Duncan know if you are interested in helping.

SEVENTY PLUS.  Eighteen septuagenarians competed in this event last Tuesday and Wednesday.  After round robin play, winners of each of the three sections advanced to the semi-finals -- Martin Liddell, Litza Slemko, and Tom Bruce.  They were joined by "the best of the rest" -- Joan Appleton.  Slemko and Appleton prevailed over Bruce and Liddell to advance to the final.  Joan was the winner of that game and was presented with the trophy.  The play was excellent, and the two novices who took part gained much experience for their upcoming competition.

WOMEN'S PLAY.  The Quaddie Tournament planned for July 30th has been delayed until next Thursday.  Some were reluctant to play in the extreme weather conditions we have been experiencing.  The change of date has resulted in several openings to make up the 24 players needed for a quaddie.  Do add you name to the list on the board if you are interested in taking part on August 6.  Also, don't forget to sign up soon for the women's singles tournament (or call Betty at 250-748-6542 or email her at baglady@shaw.ca).

CLUB LOGO SHIRTS AND NAME BARS.  The shirt order has arrived.  Shirts will be available from Betty Locke beginning immediately.  The golf-style are $21  and ladies' scoop are $14 .  Most new members have picked up their name bars from the clubhouse.  If you still don't have yours, look on the counter by the bulletin boards.

SATURDAY.  The lottery has been carried forward yet again.  This week's jackpot should be close to $100!  Play begins at ten.  Bring a lunch for after the game.  It will be warm; so come prepared -- sun screen, hat, parasol or umbrella, and water bottle.

JUNIORS.  Kerry Davis and parent volunteers accompanied four of our junior members to the mainland last weekend to play in the provincial playoffs.  Essa Gierc finished fourth overall (one spot away from a medal), Kaylee Keck finished second for the silver medal, and Nolan Gierc successfully defended the title he won last year and will again represent BC at the nationals in Saskatoon in August.  Our club is proud of both the success of our junior program (thank you Kerry Davis and Jim Irvine) and the individual successes of our junior members (congratulations and just keep rolling along!).

CINDY ROBSON.  We are sorry to report that Cindy will not be playing for the remainder of this season due to injuries sustained in a recent car accident.  We will miss her willingness and enthusiasm.  We wish her well in her recovery and look forward to seeing her on the green next spring.

JOE SPENCER.  Although he was not a member this year and played rarely last year, Joe was a long-time member of our club.  He died suddenly at home a week ago.  He was a keen bowler and actively supportive of the club having served as president a number of years ago.  A memorial service is planned for Friday, July 31 at 11am at St. Edward's church.

-------------------------------------------------------------

TUESDAY JULY 21

MARKERS SEMINAR.  Ross Bulley will conduct a seminar for members interested in acting as markers for singles play on Monday, July 27 from 4:00 - 5:30 pm.  Those attending will learn the role of the marker in singles play. The seminar will provide guidelines for markers' duties, cover “Laws of the Sport” that pertain to marking and a few things you should “do” and a few things you should “not do” when marking.  You may register by signing up on the activities board in the clubhouse, or by phoning Ross (250-246-9958) or by emailing him (rjbulley@xplornet.com).

SEVENTY PLUS.  At this time, we have about a dozen signed up for the 70+ club championship playoff set for July 28 and 29.  The format is singles play to 15 points with a 90-minute time limit.  The number of entries is not capped, so you may still enter.

WOMEN'S DAY QUADDIE.  Twenty-four have signed up for this event.  Do add your name in case of cancellations.  Play will be Thursday morning, July 30 -- 8:45 arrival for 9:00 play.  Registration -- $2 for prizes.  Bring a dish to share for the pot luck lunch to follow.

WOMEN'S SINGLES.  The competition for women's club champion is scheduled for August 4 and 5.  The winner will represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs competition in Victoria in September.  Should the winner not be able to compete there, the runner-up is eligible to attend.  The sign-sheet is now on the activities board.

SUNDAY FUN DAY.  Last Sunday 32 players took part in a quaddie tournament -- including eight of our novices!  For many it was a first quaddie experience, but all seemed to enjoy the format.  Eight teams first played four ends of fours.  Teams then split into pairs, then triples and singles, and finished with another fours game.  Each team accumulated its win/loss/tie record, and when play was complete Team Thorpe (Keith, Janet Gardner, Frankie Montgomery, and Ron Peebles) and Team Gammie (Joyce, Carol McCoy, Maria Ridewood, and Hugh McCoy) were tied and shared first and second place.  The August Sunday Fun Day is the always popular Yes, Dear! tournament.  Watch for information on the activities board.

SMILE CARDS.  Almost thirty members have signed up for Smile Cards, and in two months we have received $140 from Thrifty Foods.  No matter how little you may shop there, every bit contributes to our goal of $1800.  How easy is that to fund-raise for our club?  If you haven't already signed up, see Joyce Gammie for details.

SATURDAY PLAY.   The lottery draw is carried forward for the third consecutive week.  This Saturday's jackpot will be near $80!  Numbers drawn last week and the week before (3 and 41) were neither present nor activated.  So, get into the action -- attend and activate!  Saturdays at 10am -- except for this Saturday, July 25:  please arrive at 9:30 so that each of us can do fifteen minutes of weeding before the draw is made.

SHELL OIL.  When you have a choice for gasoline purchases, you may wish to choose Shell to express, indirectly, appreciation for the grant of $1000 the company has made to our club.  As a former employee, David Lovell was eligible to apply for community funding, and the application was accepted!  The money will be used to re-do our benches with unfinished cedar.  Thank you, David! And thank you, Shell Oil!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRIDAY, JULY 10

What a busy two weeks we have just had at CLBC!  We are now entering a less hectic space in our calendar, and here is what lies in store for the rest of the month:

1.  The starting time for Saturday social bowling will be 10:00am for all of July and August.  Players are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy while socializing after the game.
2.  July 19 is the next Sunday Fun Day -- Breakfast Bowls begins at 9:00am.  Close to 32 have already registered, and that is the number of players we need to run a Quaddie.  If you haven't done so already, sign up at Lotto Saturday tomorrow.
3.  The club tournament for players who are seventy or older will be held on July 28 and 29.  A registration sheet will be posted next week.
4.  The club novice competitions have been re-scheduled.  Both men's and women's play will be on August 24 and 25.  Please note this in your calendars, as the mornings of July 21, 22, 28, and 29 are now available for open play.

CANADA DAY

The jitney held on Canada Day required the full green for triples play.  Forty-eight players showed up in their red and white regalia -- a great showing of our nation's colours!  Four four-end games of triples was the format for the day.  The scoring was different, however, with three points for the shot bowl, two for second shot, and one for third.  The team of David Lovell, Evelyn Easton, and Betty Lawes finished ahead of all other teams.  Second place went to Judith Lovell, John Halliwell, and Mary Nelson.  Special mention was made, as well, of the most supportive team, whom we'll grant anonymity for now.  Play was preceded by a spider, which was won by Marilyn Boechler.  And even the non-winners seemed to enjoy the day, which included a much-appreciated lunch served by Judith Bulley and her assistants!

KEN ARMOUR TOURNAMENT

Just three days later six teams competed for Ken Armour Mixed Triples trophy.  A complete round robin was played on Saturday and Sunday.  A winner did not emerge until the completion of the final draw.  The Ross Bulley team (Betty Locke and Mark Trueman) edged out three other teams who were tied for second place.  However, the Keith Thorpe team (June Barnes, and Jill Thorpe) had beaten the other two in round robin play and was declared the runner-up.  The bowling was excellent throughout, and the spectators were treated to many exciting matches.

WOMEN'S DAY

Turnout on Thursday mornings for Women's Day play continues to be strong.  Yesterday twenty-one showed up for bowls and socializing.  A women's day tournament is planned for July 30.  It will be limited to twenty-four players, so watch for sign-up information on the activities board.  Should it fill, do still add your name to the waiting list, as cancellations may occur.  Furthermore, should the waiting list be long enough the tournament may be expanded.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

On Sunday, June 28, our green was the setting for a day of play for juniors.  Kerry Davis describes the event:

"Feed Them and They Will Come. Put Them on the Green and They Will Bowl."

"Feed then and they will come."  That's what Cindy Robson did for CLBC Juniors, Victoria Juniors, and parents and coaches of the children. Cindy had fruit bars for the Juniors when they arrived for the 10:00 a.m start. She had coffee and tea for parents, drivers and coaches. She had hot dogs with condiments and potato chips and drinks for lunch. There was melon and fresh cherries from the Irvine garden for an afternoon snack. (Thanks for all that you did Cindy.)

"Put them on the green and they will bowl." That's what Jim and Penny Irvine, Wayne and Hazel Grant, Dave Collett and John Halliwell saw. Thanks you six people for being available and teaching the young ones. Juniors rolled at big targets and lonely targets. They had to trail the jack and stop on a delivery mat. So some easy targets and some that had adult lawn bowlers say, "That's too tough for me!"  But the Juniors just gave it their best. They demonstrated an attitude that says, "All lawn bowlers can learn from the youngsters."

There weren't trophies, but Juniors had to pay $2 to participate. There was a $30 pot for prize money. 5th place won a Looney, 4th won a Tooney, 3rd won $4, 2nd won $8 and the winner, Nolan Gierc, won $14. The extra dollar was used in a Spider.

The day was not just a bowling and prize day though. The Juniors did have to participate in a Scavenger hunt, interview a newly met peer, and then tell about that peer. The following comments from Juniors sum up the day; "I feel so tired!" and "Can we stay here?"

Our photo gallery has not been updated due to some technical problems.  Hopefully by the next update pictures of recent events will be shown.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24

The past week has been a busy one at the club.  For almost the entire time, regular open bowling was replaced by other activities.  Here are the highlights:

1.  Women's 2-Bowl 6-Pack Tournament.  Tuesday and Wednesday were devoted to play by fourteen women's teams representing many clubs on Vancouver Island.  When all had completed their thirteen games, the overall winner was the Rosemary Waldie team from the Victoria West Lawn Bowling Club.  The runners-up were the Betty Locke team from CLBC and Sandy Kajewski from the Juan de Fuca club.  (See photo of the winners and the newspaper article from the Citizen, below.)

2.  Thursday the green was verticut and, with a gang of helpers, the job was done in short order.  By evening, the green was in use again by the evening singles league.

3.  Friday morning many Bowls South Island clubs were represented in the Friday morning men's triples league.  The various participating clubs take turns in hosting play, and fourteen teams (including the CLBC team) participated.

4.  On Saturday and Sunday the Jim Lee Tournament was held.  Enough players registered to form eight teams.  The double-knockout format was won by the team of Gord Fall, Barry Patterson, and Nolan Gierc, defeating the David Lovell team (Irene White and Annie Mae Miller) in the final.  Dave Gardner, June Barnes, and Cindy Robson finished third.

CANADA DAY JITNEY

Pre-registration is require for the July 1st jitney.  Already the sign-up sheet is two-thirds full!  It begins at 11:00am with play both prior to and following a hamburger lunch.  The $5.00 registration fee includes lunch and prizes.  Pay on arrival.

KEN ARMOUR TOURNAMENT

This mixed triples tournament takes place on July 4 and 5.  It is an in-house competition and you enter the team of your choice on the sign-up sheet on the activities board.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

On June 28 the club is host to junior play for a fun competition.  Juniors from Victoria will be here to play with our junior members.  Members are welcome to visit the green while they are playing (between ten and two).

NAME BARS

Because we had the week off, name bars can still be ordered.  Next Tuesday evening will be the cut-off.  Please indicate whether you want the pin or a magnet style.

SATURDAY

Saturday play resumes at 11:00am on the 27th.  Be there for a roll-up and to be in the lotto draw.

6-PACK WINNERS (with presenter, Betty Locke)

CITIZEN COVERAGE

MONDAY, JUNE 15

HOT FLASHES!!!!!

1.  Open bowling is cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings because of the Women's 2-Bowl 6-Pack open tournament.  Play will be from 9:30am through 3:30pm.  Spectators are welcome to come and watch some of the best women bowlers on Vancouver Island!
2.  On Tuesday, from 11:30 until 2:00, the Henselite representative will be at the club with samples of bowls and other equipment items.
3.  Women's Day is cancelled this week, as verticutting will be done on Thursday morning.  The evening singles league will carry on, as usual.
4.  The Jim Lee club triples tournament will be held this weekend, June 20 and 21.  Individual members may still sign up until Friday noon.  A few more are needed for a "perfect draw".  Note that regular Saturday bowling will be cancelled for this week.
5.  Friday morning open bowling is cancelled for this week  Our club has a team entered in Friday morning Bowls South Island men's triples play.  Each week the16 teams meet at a different club, and this week it is our turn to host.  Again, spectators are welcome.

LOTTO SATURDAY

About thirty-five bowlers came for our Saturday event.  The day was hot, and some were asking when we might change to "summer hours" (10am through noon).  A decision will be made soon.

The number drawn was activated; so we have no carry-over for next week.  Tommy Traynor was the lucky winner.  Also, the draw now has ten club numbers in the mix.

SUNDAY FUN DAY.  Afternoon Bowls and Tea attracted eighteen players to play and to enjoy the teatime snacks and beverages.  After three short games of triples, wherein players changed teams every four ends and accumulated their individual scores, the winners of Greenbucks were:  Lead - Marilyn Boechler, Third - Judith Lovell , and Skip - Betty Locke.

WOMEN NOVICE PLAY.  Last Friday, five of our novice women (Sheila MacDonald, Marilyn Boechler, Janet Gardner, Irene Smedley, and Pat Unger) spent an afternoon playing and socializing at a gathering for Bowls South Island novices.  It was a great opportunity to meet other new players and to practise their new skills in a non-threatening environment under the supervision of coaches.  (How many from our club can you identify in the picture?)

NAME BARS.  An order sheet for club name bars is on the activities board in the club house.  Please place your orders by Saturday afternoon.  Name bars are available with magnets or pins.  Please specify your preference.

JUNIOR PROGRAM.  On Sunday five of our juniors, accompanied by Kerry Davis, spent a pleasant day in Victoria bowling and meeting other South Island junior members.  Plans are afoot for further interaction prior to the BC Junior Championship playoffs.  While we were not the winners overall, our club had the largest representation!  Here is Kerry's description of the day:

Mrs. Gierc and Kerry Davis drove five Juniors to Vic West Lawn
Bowling Club. Juniors from the 2008 season were Nolan Gierc, Essa
Gierc and Kaylee Keck. Two new members who responded to the
opportunity were Essa's friend Katie Olfert and Kaylee's friend
Mikayla Broadway.

The whole party met at CLBC at 8:45 to collect club bowls and were
off to Victoria soon after so that they were on the Vic West green at
10:00 a.m. They met Craig Wilson the B.C. Junior coach who spoke to
the thirteen youngsters about plans for the day . Pairs teams
were organized and then an eight-end game started the events for the day.
Vic West supplied markers and coaches for each lane so the juniors
who were quite new to the sport had guidance. That arrangement was in
place for the the singles games that were played in the afternoon.
Vic West provided hot dogs, chips and juices for lunch. They also had
watermelon and fresh fruit for afternoon snacks. The day provided
an opportunity for competition, visiting and eating so it was super day
for the youth.

Craig also put in place fun activites where bowls closest to the jack
earned a Tooney. Katie must have been the Tooney collector because
her bowl sure earned money for her. As well she scored the most
points for the competitive games so came home with a medallion.
Mikayla also placed well so was rewarded with a medallion too.
Passengers in Kerry's vehicle agreed that they had fun bowling in
Victoria.

SUNDAY, JUNE 7

LOTTERY FOUNDATION GRANT.  Treasurer Gordon Washburn has been advised that our club has yet again been successful in its application for funding.  The grant (in the neighbourhood of four thousand dollars each time) has been a boon to our budget.

Our special needs program provides considerable support for our application.  However, members may not be aware that the special needs program is in jeopardy because we do not have enough volunteers to sustain it.  Should an end of this program result in the loss of lottery foundation funding, we would face an increase in fees to cover the shortfall.  The amount so lost would be approximately $40 per member.  Since the club's inception we have never increased our annual dues, and a hike of that magnitude would be substantial.

Does anyone have an hour to spare on Wednesday afternoons?  Please let Betty James know, if you do.  (250-746-5998)

SIDNEY EXCHANGE.  Our annual exchange with the Sidney Club was a great success.  In the end the two clubs were tied in win/loss points.  However, CLBC did prevail in total points scored.  In the true spirit of this event being an exchange, the trophy was presented to Sidney to retain until we visit there to bring it back next year -- regardless of who wins!

SATURDAY.  The winner of the Lotto was a previous winner.  Luck of the draw!  Next week begins afresh.  Be there or risk losing without having the chance to be a winner!  John Richmond is now John Richman.

SUNDAY BOWLS AND TEA.  Our first Sunday Fun Day of the year is at 2:00pm on June 14.  Please sign the registration sheet on the activities board by next Saturday.

CONGRATULATIONS.  Litza Slemko from our club and her partner from Victoria will be the women's pairs representatives for our zone at this year's seniors games.  We wish them well in Richmond BC in September.

JIM LEE TOURNAMENT.  This annual mixed triples tournament, which is limited to club members, will be held on Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21.  A registration sheet, along with information about the tournament format, will be posted on the activities board on Monday.

WOMEN'S TWO-BOWL SIX-PACK TOURNAMENT.  Our club's only open tournament will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, June 16 and 17.  Members are reminded that no daytime general play is available those days, and Evening Pairs play is cancelled.  Members are encouraged to attend as spectators to see some of the best bowlers on Vancouver Island.  Draws begin at 9:30 each day.

NAME BARS.  New members are provided with blue plastic name bars.  Other members who would like one may sign order on the form on the activities board.  PRINT your name as you wish it to appear.  Deadline for orders is Wednesday, June17.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27

BREAKING 100.  In golf, breaking a hundred is a major accomplishment for many players.  In our case, instead of heading below that century mark, we have broken a hundred by having, for the first time, that many members!  And, we may have even more, as a few learners are still receiving instruction.

SATURDAY PLAY.  We had fair weather and a good turnout for Lotto Saturday.  We stopped for lunch after eight ends and then completed the remaining six.  This time we did not change positions after the break.  Even though support was expressed for this format, some are adamantly opposed to it.  The compromise will be that we will do the switch occasionally, but it will be announced in advance so those not wanting to do so may choose to stay away that day.  The number drawn for the lottery was not validated, so the carry-forward will increase the jackpot by twenty dollars this week.

SIDNEY EXCHANGE.  Registration for the Sidney club's visit filled very quickly.  You can still be on the waiting list, although several names are there already.  Please note that pre-payment for the day ($5) would be appreciated.  This fee covers the cost of lunch for our team and their guests.

SUNDAY FUN DAY.  The poster and sign-up sheet will be placed on the activities board on Saturday for "Afternoon Bowls and Tea" on June 14.  The $5 registration includes prizes, food, and coffee/tea.

SILENT AUCTION.  When all the bidding was done, the club received just over $80 as a result of the silent auction.  Thank you to both the successful bidders and to those who donated the items offered.

PROBUS CLUBS.  The green and clubhouse will not be available to the general membership on the afternoons of June 4 and 11 as the two local Probus clubs will be in attendance to try our game.  We are optimistic that these two events may result in even more members!

Other days coming up affected by special events are June 16 and 17 (Women's Two-Bowl Six-Pack Tournament), June 19 (morning only -- South Island Men's Triples), and June 28 (South Island Juniors).

MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOKS.  The 2009 edition of this useful booklet is now available for each member.  Betty and Duncan will be distributing them; so be sure to get yours!

EVENING LEAGUES.  This week Tuesday Pairs and Thursday Singles will reach the mid-way point of the spring session.  If you are interested in how the participants are performing, up-to-date results are posted on the board next to the playing number disks.

"When you're long, you're still in play; when you're short, you're in the way."

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20

LAST SATURDAY.  More than thirty came to play, and we had our second lotto winner!  Bev Martin claimed the jackpot which had accumulated over two weeks.  We'll start again on the 23rd.

VICTORIA DAY.  The jitney was a great success!  Twelve teams (mostly triples) competed against the yardstick to accumulate points, while changing rinks every two ends.  An added challenge was the use of "random jacks" -- once delivered, jacks were not re-set except to be replaced in bounds when necessary.  The winning team with fifty points comprised Betty Lawes, Mark Trueman, and Gord Fall.

MEMBERSHIP.  Our coaches continue to work with prospective members, and we currently have 98 members.  Whenever possible, coaches play with new players during their early forays onto the green.  Both coaches and new players appreciate the patience of other players in their early days (and also resisting the temptation to coach them even further!

The junior program is in full operation with phys. ed. classes from several schools participating.  From time to time they have to be scheduled in the morning, which means sharing the green with regular play.  The coaching schedule is posted on the games board.

SIDNEY EXCHANGE.  This popular and friendly competition will be at our club on June 3 (9:30 through early afternoon).  The registration sheet is (as of Thursday morning) posted on the games board.  We must limit our entry to eight teams of triples, so enter early to be sure to be included.  Entry fee:  $5.00.

Other June dates to keep in mind are the 14th (our first Sunday Fun Day) and the 20th/21st (the Jim Lee Tournament).  Watch the games board for more information.

SILENT AUCTION.  Bids are accumulating on the items offered and may continue to be made through the lunch break at next Saturday's bowls.  After that he highest bidders will then claim items bid on.  (All items were donated and all funds go to the club.)

TUESDAY, MAY 12

SATURDAY MORNING PLAY.  So far we have had two Lotto Saturdays.  The turnout has been good with over thirty players each time.  The first lottery draw produced a winner -- Reg Grainger -- however, the second is carried over until next Saturday.  Good luck then!

A slightly different format has been used so far, playing eight ends before stopping for lunch.  The remainder of the game was then played with each member of a team playing a different position.  Positive feedback was expressed after the first occasion.  Some skips appreciated the opportunity to play down on the team; other players saw the game from a different perspective for the first time.  Nevertheless, have since had two complaints about this manner of play.

Please let Duncan (Games Chair) how you feel about this format.  Even if you don't feel strongly either way, it is important to know that, as well.  You can reply by email to duncanofduncan@shaw.ca, tell him in person, or call him at 250-748-6542.  The results of this informal survey are important in planning for future play.

MEMBERSHIP.  Our membership list has been submitted to Bowls South Islands with ninety-five names on it.  We are still in the coaching process and two groups will visit for an open house in early June.  We could easily be over one hundred members for the first time.

VICTORIA DAY JITNEY.  A registration sheet has been posted for this event on Monday, May 18.  Should you not be at the club prior to that, you can email or phone your entry to Ross Bulley (jrbulley@xplornet.com or 250-246-9958).

VOLUNTEERS.  Coaching is but one of the ways in which our members volunteer assistance.  The entire operation of our club depends upon the willingness of all to contribute in one or more of the many areas of need -- kitchen duty, clubhouse cleaning, gardening, grass-cutting, weeding the green, running jitneys, opening the green for open draws, assisting with special needs Betty James or juniors programs Kerry Davis/Jim Irvine, and serving on the board are some examples.  It is our hope that everyone will contribute in some manner.  One member has even given a monetary donation in lieu of volunteer involvement.  Try to think of one thing more that you could do.

SMILE CARDS.  One thing we can all do, is to obtain a Thrifty's Smile Card from Joyce Gammie.  Using the card when grocery shopping at Thrifty's will result in funds being raised for CLBC.  Many members have already activated theirs, and Joyce will be happy to distribute more and explain how they work.

BENCHES.  At the last board meeting, members voted to replace the boards in the benches with treated, dressed cedar.  These will last for many years and never require painting.  Work parties will be arranged to complete the changeover; so be prepared to assist in this worthwhile project!

NATIONALS.  Our club has been asked to provide 24 "flippers" for Wednesday, August 19 (two games -- morning and afternoon) during the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championship, August 17-22.  We would plan to car pool there for the day.  The work is easy -- simply turn the numbers to update the scoreboard after each end -- and we have a wonderful opportunity to be able to watch the best lawn bowlers in Canada!  Watch for a sign-up sheet.
