 NEWS AND UPDATES

2013 SEASON UNDERWAY!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Thanks so much to all of you who were able to come out for the Shaw TV promo taping. We enjoyed spectacular weather and it was great to see so many out on the green (over 40 members) - we definitely gave the film crew an accurate view of how much our members enjoys the sport of lawn bowling.

Special thanks to -

     - Ross for being there to set up the green and the draw ( it was a bit confusing not having a defined start time but it all worked out)   and also for being willing to be an interviewee (is that a word??)

     - Kerry Davis for bringing out Nolan Gierc to put a young face on our sport

     - our hospitality gals, Audrey Pirie, Betty Lawes & Joan Wilson for organizing the coffee, tea & goodies

     - to all of you who have come out in large & small work parties to spruce up the green, grounds, gardens, club house, etc. CLBC looks great & we are unofficially open for play.

Our "official" start is, of course, this Saturday, April 27th - Opening Day - draw time 10:45 am with play to begin at 11:00 am - don't forget your bag lunch - we'll take a break after about 8 ends and then resume play after lunch.

I will let you know, as soon as I know, when the video promo is on air - we actually have had a promo scrolling at the bottom of the screen for over a week - check it out on Shaw Channel 4.  Shaw has since provided us with this:  It will air all night all day beginning Thursday (just look for 'go island') in your on screen guide if you have Shaw TV.

See you on the green soon,

Pat

APRIL 2013

With the cooperation of the weatherman, we should be kicking off the bowling season very soon.  Check the Club Calendar and the Leagues & Jitneys sections closely for dates and times.

The newly ratified fee policy states that payment must be by May 1.  Technically, only paid-up members should begin play in leagues.  This means that those who have not already done so have less than a week to pay up or to make arrangements.  (If an installment plan is needed, please be in touch with our treasurer, Bruce Watson.)

So far more than half of last year's membership has renewed for 2013.  However, we have lost several members; and we hope to attract more than enough new members to replace them.  The removal of the $100 joining fee will hopefully serve as an incentive.  Do let your friends  know of this!  Next week is open house; so try to keep the coach/instructors really busy!

SPRING 2013

Because I will be traveling mid-March through mid-April, I will miss the Spring General Meeting (March 26 in the clubhouse at 1:30pm).  At that meeting several board-recommended changes to club policy and practice will be considered.  For that reason some information in the website cannot not be updated until my return.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.  Hopefully all will be current by opening day!

For now you will find the most recent information regarding activities in the Club Calendar section.

You will also notice a new selection on the left-hand side bar -- Members' Handbook.  Mark Trueman has spent  a considerable amount of time writing and compiling this document.   It truly does include everything you need to know about our club.  I am confident that you will refer to it regularly.  Ongoing editing will deal with important changes as they arise.  For now, enjoy perusing this booklet.

SEPTEMBER 17 UPDATE

MEMBER SUCCESSES!

Recent participation in play away from our club has resulted in at least two victories for CLBC members in Bowls South Island events.  The weekend before last, Jim Irvine and Mark Trueman won the B event in the Yarrow Cup Pairs tournament -- their only loss at the hands of the team that won the A event!!!  This past weekend, Irvine was successful yet again, winning the Bowl for the Cure competition at Juan de Fuca.  Supporting him there were Penny Irvine, Pat Unger, and Don Unger.  Their quaddie team experienced only one loss in ten games!  Congratulations to them all.

GREEN MAINTENANCE

As in years past, the time for fall green maintenance is upon us.  The green will be closed on Thursday, September 20 for scheduled procedures.  Hopefully the green can be used the following day; however, sand is applied to the surface, and, sometimes, scratched bowls result from this.  However, once the sand has settled and the grass has grown through it; within a day or two; we should experience little disruption in access to our facility.  If it is inadvisable to bowl on Friday or Saturday, a notice will be displayed on the entrance gate.

When playing on a sandy surface, try not to use the rakes.  Kicking, carrying, or rolling the bowls on the completion of an end will minimize the abrasive effect of the sand on the surface of the bowls.

NOTE:  While this is short notice, the green will be available tomorrow (Wednesday, September 19) for open bowling and Men's Day.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE

In the most recent update, it should have been noted that the Turney Twos Tournament will not be played as scheduled.  Instead it will be held in early May, 2013.

Because of this, he green is now available for regular play on September 13 and 14.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2012

Sadly, the bowling season is drawing to a close!  We are in the final month of the season, which officially ends on Sunday, September 30.

SO!  You MUST get out there and bowl -- especially now that you now have extra time to do so!  Open bowling is available every morning of the week, as well as the Saturday Brown Bag Bowls.  The weekday start time is 10am, Monday through Friday, and social Saturday begins at 11am (8 ends followed by a lunch break with with six ends to conclude play after that)..  LET'S FILL THE GREEN ALL SEPTEMBER!

Don't forget that during September, bowling is free for prospective members.  So, bring your friends out to try it.  Our coaches will happily provide basic instruction.  Contact Ross (250-246-9958) or Betty (250-748-6542).

Note:  Following the closing date, the green will be available for play as long as weather and green conditions  cooperate.  However, no organized play will be offered.  Members are encouraged to make their own arrangements and continue to enjoy the season as long as the weather and green condition permit!  Note, as well, that at some point in September greens maintenance will require closure for a day or so; however, you will be notified of this in advance.

LABOUR DAY JITNEY

On Labour Day, forty-eight of us showed up for a Kitty in the Middle jitney.  While at times it seemed that it was more "muddle" than "middle", most seemed to enjoy the experience of playing only short jacks and appreciating the finesse involved therein.  Ten equal prizes were awarded, ranging from "best in show" to the "crying towel" awards.

Many entered into the spirit of the day, arriving "dressed for work" and carrying their "lunch buckets".  The photo below shows some of the prize winners and also the costuming that made the day special.

CHAMP OF CHAMPS

This past weekend four of our members represented CLBC as club champions at the Bowls South Island Champ of Champs Tournament.  This is a special honour for these four people, as they qualified to compete against the club champions from all the member clubs of BSI.  Our novice representatives were Joan Wilson and Keith Bennett; with Litza Slemko and Keith Thorpe in the women's and men's divisions, respectively.  Five other members attended to assist as markers, and Ross Bulley was an umpire for one day.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE

On September 18, we will host the Parksville Lawn Bowling Club for a day of friendly competition.  Those interested may sign up on the games board in the clubhouse; however, should more than the 24 players needed be on the list, a random draw will be made.  Deadline for entering is September 15.

SUNDAY FUN DAY CLOSING JITNEY

The bowling season will end, officially, on Sunday the 30th.  Do plan to attend the closing jitney fun day that day.  Details will be announced in the next week or so.  Do keep checking.  The day will comprise afternoon bowls followed by supper and socializing.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM is scheduled for October 16 at 1pm in the clubhouse.  Mark this date on your calendars.  Details will be shared at least two weeks prior to the meeting.

UPDATE - JUNE 30

This update will be the last until near the end of July.  Duncan and Betty Locke leave today and will be travelling until their return on July 24.  Here is a summary of recent club activities

The Ken Armour Tournament which honours one of our CLBC founding members of the club was held on June 23&24.  Ten teams each  played five games after which the four with the best records proceeded to the semi finals, pitting

The Spring Pairs league has finished as of Thursday afternoon.  Winners were the Maria Ridewood and Carol McCoy team.  The valiantly fought battle against Mark Trueman and Joan Wilson was waged on this very unsettled and rainy afternoon.   Thank you to Mark Trueman and his efforts each week to manage this popular and enjoyable league.

Club rosters have been distributed.  Anyone who has not yet received a copy is asked to obtain one from the left top drawer of the counter.  The rosters are in a black and gold bag.  We believe that the following people have not yet received them:  Marilyn Boechler, Pat Bradley, Jack Bridges, Kerry Davis, Joyce Gammie, Hazel and Wayne Grant, Carole Hourigan, Peter Kells, Sheila MacDonald, Eddie McEachan, Russ McGee,  Bill Younger, David and Judith Lovell, Marge Sterling.

Members are encouraged to sign up to play in the Men's and Women's singles which will be staged mid-July.  The winner of these events will represent our club in the Champ of Champs in Victoria in September.  Finally, don't forget the Canada Day jitney on July 1!

Coaching workshops offered by Ross Bulley were announced in an email message yesterday.  It is repeated below for your convenience:

1. New Bowlers:  Tuesday, July 3 1:00 pm (after Women's day)
I am planning to hold a coaching session for this years new bowlers and anyone else who might want to sit in.  I will answer question that have come up during play but I plan to review basic procedures for throwing the jack (when is it live, when not), setting the mat (where can and should it be placed), where to stand behind the head, what are the duties of the lead, third, skip etc., what are the basics of running a head or giving advice to a skip (novice bowers normally would not have this responsibility but since many are taking part in the pairs league, there are things you need to know).  If time permits, I will also give some help to bowlers re their delivery if they are having problems but if time is short, I can set aside time for a later session.

2. Markers Clinic:  Thursday, July 5  2:00 pm  or 4:00 pm  At the moment, if evening pairs starts at 6:00 pm, the clinic will start at 4:00 pm If the pairs numbers warrant going to two shifts, 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, I will move the clinic to the 2:00 pm time.
The clinic should take about an hour and a half. If there are a lot of questions, it may take a bit longer. Please signup on the sheet posted. I need some idea of how many will be taking the session.  If you have a copy of the Joint Laws please bring it.

3  Measuring Clinic:
I plan to offer a measuring clinic on July 23 at 1:00 pm after the ladder pairs.  Please put your name on the signup sheet if interested.

RECENTLY AT THE CLUB
(courtesy Betty Locke)

1.  Emerging Athlete Program

The Cowichan Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Emerging Athlete Program headed by Stephen Forrest on June fifth and sixth.  Joining participants from our club were several from up Island.  The leader was Stephen Forrest who has captured many titles in lawn bowling in Canada.  He and his wife, Robin, also a champion bowler, constantly checked up on us as we went through our challenges.  Deliveries were video taped and will be available to us.

Through exercises which addressed physical fitness, technical excellence and emotional and mental discipline, we were given the steps to lawn bowing success.  We became aware of the one metre Magic Circle and had exercises to develop skills in rolling our bowls into this circle.  We determined our "natural length".  We talked about strategy and working well as a team.  Each participant received a student workbook and an excellent publication written by Stephen entitled 4 Steps to Success in Lawn Bowls.

The two day workshop included one day in which the workshop participants played against club bowlers to practise some of the strategies discussed the day before.

Ross Bulley was instrumental in setting up this workshop for us.  He enlisted several Cowichan members as assistants for the two days.  The modest fee charged was money well spent to learn some of the finer points of the game.

2.  Sunday Fun Day

The first of several Sunday Fun Days was held on June 10th.  42 bowlers arrived at two o'clock for four six end games.  Teams randomly selected, were designated as "red" or "blue".  To add to the fun of the day, second chance tickets were sold.  If a player sent a bowl which did not disturb the head, but was not a good shot, he could have the bowl over again for the price of a ticket.  Sales were brisk and many bowls were rethrown sometimes with very good results.  Another side event was a tally of the number of times the jack was touched.  The team having the most touchers was given a prize.  The second chance ticket draw was won by Mike Hanson.  The winning red team comprised Marilyn Clark, Pete Williams, Addi Bentzen; while the blue winner was the Locke team (including Beth Driedger and Marilyn Silver).  Many new bowlers came out to this fun event.

After the bowling was over, a dinner of salads and desserts was served.  We are told that the "refreshment" centre did a brisk business.  The weather was pleasant for which we were most thankful considering what we have been having.

3.  Ladies Two Bowl Six Pack

Cowichan Lawn Bowling Club was host to the very popular Ladies Two Bowl Six Pack on June 12 and 13.  Ten teams from other centres on Vancouver Island and Powell River came to our green for this two-day event.  This year our club had four teams competing as the Joan Appleton team  who won this event  last year gained an automatic entry.  To determine our three ladies teams we had an elimination tournament in which five teams took part.  Bundled and parkas and layers, rain pants and umbrellas we braved the elements   Teams emerging as the three winners were the Maria Ridewood team of Janet Gardner and Gillian Nicholson, the Betty Locke team of Pat Unger and Carole Hourigan and the Hazel Grant team of Sheila Weathered and Carol McCoy.

The fourteen teams in the Six Pack were required to play 13 six end games, every team played every other team.  The outcome was unknown well into the second day but when all was said and done, the Joan Firkins team of Donna Blackstock and Pat Thomas from Oak Bay were the winners.  We were delighted that one of our teams, the Ridewood team, was a close second and  the third place went to the Sharon Kennedy team from Juan de Fuca.

Our wonderful kitchen crew headed by Judith Lovell and ably assisted by Barbara Grainger who managed the proceedings for the Six Pack handled the kitchen duties with ease.  A delicious lunch was served on the first day.  Visitors were very complimentary about the efforts of the kitchen during the two day event.  The tournament was run by Duncan Locke.  Ross Bulley was the umpire.  Things went very smoothly.  We were delighted that many people dropped in to watch some of the games.  Thank you for the support and interest shown.

4.  BBQ Bowls

Friday, June 15th, sixteen bowlers gathered for 4pm bowls followed by a barbecue with tasty salads and baked potatoes  provided by the hosting committee.  Tom Slemko provided music from the fifties and sixties for our listening pleasure while we bowled.  Great to hum along to the good "oldies"  Barbecues are next planned for July 6, 14 and July 20.  Janet welcomes both offers to volunteer and suggestions to vary the format.

5.  Logo T Shirts

The logo t-shirts which were ordered have now been distributed.  A suggestion by Dave Gardner was acted upon which has resulted in the acquiring of a preshrunk polyester and cotton t shirt in our club colours.  Several of those who have purchased the new shirt have made very favourable comments about it as compared with the original pique shirts which some found hot and bulky.  Three blue collared shirts are available for purchase:  large, medium and a 2XL.  If you are interested, contact Betty Locke.  (M and L $16.75; XXL $18.00)

6.  Decals

Decals have been ordered and will be here shortly.

UPDATE - MAY 30

WHAT'S UP?

The best news of late is that the multiplicity of internet and website problems has been surmounted.  We can communicate once again!  For this, I am much indebted to friend, Barbara Qualley.  It was under her tutelage that our website was originally established; and, once again, she has been a key component in working through these trials.  (Because the website has been tinkered with, considerably, it may be necessary to press your "refresh" button upon entering the site.)

1.  LADIES' DAY.  While this Tuesday event is scheduled for 9:30am, a decision has been made to begin at 10:00 on a trial basis for three sessions.  Following this, a choice between the two will be made for the remainder of the season.

2.  EMERGING ATHLETES PROGRAM.  CLBC will host this two-day clinic next Tuesday and Wednesday (June 5th and 6th).  Greens will be fully used until 4:00pm.

3.  LADIES 2-BOWL 6-PACK TOURNAMENT.  Entries have closed for the in-house competition to determine the three representatives for this tournament from our club.  This playoff will be on June 7 but will not use the entire green; so regular open bowling will not be affected.  The tournament itself is on June 12 and 13 during which time regular bowing is cancelled during the day.

4.  SUNDAY FUN DAY.  The season's first Sunday Fun Day is scheduled for June 10.  Details are provided on the sign-up sheet on the playing board.  The day will include afternoon bowls followed by a summer salad supper.  Entry fee: $6.00.

5.  FRIDAY EVENING BOWLS.  Bowling and socializing over food is on your calendar for June 15 and 29.  Watch for details.

6.  KEN ARMOUR MIXED TRIPLES.  Start forming your teams for this in-club tournament slated for June 23 and 24.  Look for details on the playing board and watch for the registration sheet.

7.  CLUB SHIRTS.  Still thinking about a club logo shirt?  Friday noon is the deadline, as the order will be placed that afternoon.

8.  VOLUNTEERS.  By this time, every member should be on at least one volunteer list!  Even if that were so, some areas still are in need.  Please consider assisting with some aspect of club operation.  Clubhouse duties, gardening, maintenance, green opening, and event coordination are a few areas that can always use extra help.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 23, 2011

SUNDAY FUN DAY CLOSING JITNEY - September 25

The list below comprises those participants who signed up for this event.  Names are alphabetical -- skips in Column 1, thirds in Column 2, and leads in Column 3.  Teams will be randomly drawn for play in the competition entitled TOPSY-TURVY TWO-BOWL TRIPLES.  If your name is missing please let Duncan know (748-6542).  If you are not able to play, please advise him of this.

The format for play is this:  players will use two bowls only; skips will throw the jack and the first two bowls of each end; they will be followed by thirds; and leads will throw last.  Competition will be a series of three-end matches the results of which will be scored in this way:  1 point for each end won and one point for winning the match (2 or 3 ends won).  Points scored do not factor into the result for each match.  Teams will score 0 or up to 4 points and then move on to the next match following the rotation chart provided.

Following a minimum of six matches, supper will be served in the clubhouse.  The menu is Cowboy Stew, on or with a bun, and Cole Slaw.  A vegetarian chili is available for non-carnivores.  This will be followed by cake and coffee/tea.  Coffee and tea are included, but other beverages will be available for purchase.

Arrive at 2:45 for registration and teams formation and weed control (see below).

LAST GASP SATURDAY

For tomorrow's play, those attending are asked to come prepared for a weeding session.  This is in advance preparation for fall maintenance of the green.  Twenty minutes prior to 11:00 o'clock play will be devoted to weed eradication; so please come with an implement to assist you in this -- a knife, a dandelion remover, a paint can opener, or even a key will do the trick.  This will be repeated on Sunday, as well; however, play is still scheduled for 3:00pm.

MONDAY LADDER PLAY

Ladder play ended last Monday with Tom Renton being the overall winner.  His victory over Ross Bulley decided the crown, the winner of that game being at the top of the leader board following the season's play.

TURNEY TWOS

The Turney Twos championship (wherein this year's novices are randomly paired with second year players) was held last week.  After six games of round robin play, the winners were the Clint Bailey/Paul Gallagher team.  Ray and Millie Turney (for whom the event is named) were there for the final round and made the trophy presentation.  Runners-up were Cec Poznecov and Maureen Gallacher.

GAMES UPDATE (Submitted by Janet Gardner, Games Chair)

The Parksville Exchange was lots of fun.  We played our best but, alas, we lost out to Parksville.  There is always next year!  Speaking of next year anyone who was signed up for the Exchange but was not drawn will automatically be selected before the random draw occurs for the Sydney Exchange 2012 .  The same will happen for all exchanges in the future.  Thank you Marilyn Clark for this great idea.

We had 15 people participate in the Bowl for the Cure at Juan de Fuca this year.  That has to be a record for CLBC.   The only action left for the season is the Closing Day Jitney which is being organized by Betty and Duncan.  This has been a terrific season of bowling and I am already looking forward to next year and I hope you are too.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 12

CHAMP OF CHAMPS

The Bowls South Island Champ of Champs competition was held at Juan de Fuca this past weekend.  CLBC was not represented in the men's and women's novice section, as none of our qualifiers was able to compete.  Tom Slemko and Phyl Ingram were our representatives in the men's and women's divisions, respectively.

The men's competition consisted of qualifying rounds on Saturday followed by semi-finals and finals on Sunday.  The women played a complete round robin over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  At the completion of the nine games, Phyl finished second, overall, with Cheryle Bergevin (Central Saanich) being the winner, having suffered only one loss.  Congratulations to Phyl!  The men's event was won by Harry Harrison from Juan de Fuca.

TURNEY TWOS - September 14&15

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, our 2011 novices will be paired with last year's novices to compete for the Turney Twos Trophy.  Six teams will participate, playing a complete round robin -- three games Wednesday and two on Thursday morning.

Not all rinks will be used; so members may still play on those that are vacant.  However, it would be great to see a gallery gather to support our newest members who will be our future challengers!  Play will be from 9 until about 2 on Wednesday and 9 until noon on Thursday.  Ray and MIllie Turney will be on hand to present the trophy.

OPEN BOWLING

Open bowling is now available  on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings until the green is closed, usually sometime in October.  Saturday, September 24th is officially that last day; but, beyond that, those who arrive for ten o'clock play can organize themselves.  Men's and women's days have been held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings but unused rinks are always available to others.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE - September 21

As expected, this event was over-subscribed!  Selection for CLBC's contingent of eight triples teams to compete in Parksville next week was made by random draw.  The team members have been selected by lottery and were announced earlier.  Good luck!  CLBC won two years ago when last we visited.

OLD NEWS

Here a couple of items that have not yet been reported:

1.  Central Saanich Daffodil Women's Pairs.  On August 30&31, Betty Locke and Phyl Ingram competed in this event.  At the end of Tuesday's play they were undefeated and in first place overall.  Sadly they lost on Wednesday morning  in the semi-finals.  Congratulations are in order, nonetheless.

2.  CLBC Pears Trophy Mixed Pairs Tournament.  What a turnout this event drew!  24 teams!  Mark Trueman rose to the challenge and managed to complete play in just two days.  Day One (September 1) was a qualifying round of three games.  Eight teams were eliminated and the remaining sixteen continued play the next day.  When results of the four games for the day were compiled, the winning pair was Ross Bulley and Betty Locke.  Well done!

GAMES UPDATE (Submitted by Janet Gardner)

The Men’s Singles was played on August 29 and 30th.  This was a great tournament to watch with numerous upsets and some amazing games.  Fourteen men participated in the tournament.  Three Tom’s and David were in the semi-finals, Tom Slemko, Tommy Traynor, Tom Renton and David Gardner.  Tom Slemko and David Gardner squared off for the final with Tom Slemko squeaking out a win in a hotly contested game. The audience enjoyed a terrific game.  Congratulations Tom.

Tom Slemko and Phil Ingram will be going to the Champ of Champs in September.  Neither of our novice champions or the runners up are available to play at the Champ of Champs this year.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIP (Submitted by Janet Gardner)

On August 23 the Men and Women’s Novice Tournaments were played.   We had four women and three men participating.  The Women’s Novice Tournament winner was Maureen Gallacher.  Second place was won by Addi Bentzen.  Joy Bennett and Dorothy Madden were participants, as well. The games were hard fought right to the very end.  Good bowling.  The Men’s Novice was won convincingly  by Clint Bailey.  He won all three of his games.  Jimmy Patrick came in second and Roy Smith came in third.  Thank you to all of the people who helped with the marking and set up.  Tournament organizers were Maria Ridewood and Bill Cleary.

UPDATE - AUGUST 12

GAMES UPDATE (Submitted by Janet Gardner)

The Holiday Week Tournament took place August 1-6, 2011. CLBC put in four teams this year. On Monday and Tuesday David Gardner played Men’s Singles and won 1st place. Tuesday and Wednesday Tom Renton, Roy Jaskow and David Gardner played Men’s Triples and won 1st place. Friday and Saturday Tom Renton and David Gardner played Men’s Pairs and won 1st place. On Thursday and Friday Janet Gardner, Alice Trueman and Cindy Robson played Women’s triples and were in the semi finals winning 3rd place. David Gardner was a triple crown winner because he won all of the men’s sections in this tournament. This has only been done once before in the history of Holiday Week Tournament Play. This was quite an amazing showing by the Cowichan Club. The last game of the whole tournament was the Men’s Pairs and they won by 1 point. There were a few spectators that just about passed out from the tension. Heartiest Congratulations to all of the participants. They have done us proud.  (JG)

Four players from CLBC traveled to Vancouver to compete in the pairs and 4’s in Vancouver Holiday Week.   Mark Trueman, Jim Irvine, Clint Bailey and Dave Gardner managed to get into the A Event in the 4’s.  Dave Gardner and Mark Trueman came 2nd in the B Event in the pairs. Jim Irvine and Clint Bailey came 3rd in the C Event.  This was quite a good showing because many excellent players from Vancouver and other parts of BC played in this competition.  Clint Bailey is a novice bowler and took on the challenge of a major tournament and did really well. Congratulations all.  (JG)

[Editors' Note:  As well as those mentioned by Janet, several CLBC members have played in other venues, as well --  Phyl Ingram and Cindy Robson in provincial women's pairs; Ross Bulley and Dave Gardner in provincial men's pairs; Tom Renton and Cindy Robson in Vic West pairs; Gordon and Trudy Fall in Vic West Pairs; Tom and Litza Slemko in the Burnside Andy Stewart pairs; and Betty and Duncan Locke in the Bonney Cup Invitational Triples in Penticton.  Others may have been involved whom I have not yet heard about. (DL)]

BC DAY JITNEY

Keith and Jill Thorpe did an admirable job of handling this event.  A full slate of 64 players enjoyed the challenges presented on a unique set of bowling greens.  They and their helpers deserve high praise for the day, and the winners definitely deserved their booty!

LADIES' PAIRS PLAY

Under the leadership of Sheila Wethered, a dozen women participated in a five-week pairs round robin held late Wednesday afternoons.  While not intended to become a league, it was an interesting diversion which may be repeated another year.  The winners were the Betty Locke/Trish Peebles team.  All teams were randomly drawn at the outset and competition was keen throughout.  A celebration supper was enjoyed by all following the last game.

THURSDAY PAIRS

As play is winding down in the second half, another eight-ender was scored last evening!  The first was by Bill Cleary and Bruce McCormick early in the season, and yesterday's was scored by Frankie Montgomery and Duncan Locke.

NOVICE SINGLES

Dates for this competition have been changed due to scheduling difficulties.  Three men and five women are eligible to compete for their respective titles -- and their names on the trophies!

MEN'S 2-BOWL 6-PACK

This tournament has been slightly revised.  Due to low registration it will be played on one day only  -- August 16.

YES, DEAR!  SINGLES ADVANTAGE

This popular Sunday Fun Day event filled completely at early registration last Monday.  Teams may still sign up to be on the wait list in the event of cancellations.  Participants are to arrive at 12:45 for a 1:00pm start on August 21.

WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

This competition is open to all CLBC women members (both novices and veterans).  Play will be on Thursday and Friday, August 18th &19th.  The signup sheet is on the games board.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES

The annual battle between the macho males and the girly-girls will take place on Wednesday, August 24.  The men will host this year in both the planning and the lunch provided.  The format will limit registration to the first 24 participants who register in the two categories.  The signup sheet will be posted prior to Brown Bag Bowls tomorrow (August 13).  Register early to avoid disappointment.

MENS' SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

The competition is scheduled for August 29&30, and information will be made available shortly.

CLUB PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

So far, twenty teams have registered for this event to be played on September 1&2.  That represents almost half of the active members in the club!  Mark Trueman is coordinating play and will be closing entries very soon.  If others are interested the signup sheet has not yet been removed.

COACHING AND OFFICIATING

Our coaches continue to meet  with prospective new members (our membership is currently 102).  Coaching is always available for members on request by asking either Ross Bulley or Betty Locke, who can assist you or put you in touch with another of our certified coaches.  Ross has also held a number of information sessions which have been well-attended.

Ross is also an umpire and is called upon frequently to officiate at Bowls South Island events.  The number of umpires in BSI is shrinking rapidly.  Anyone interested in becoming an umpire, or even in doing the study leading up to qualification, should contact Ross.  CLBC members Judith Lovell and Jim Brown are already in the second category.

UPDATE - JULY 29

RECENT RESULTS

Congratulations to our most recent in-house winners:
Ken Armour Triples Trophy -
Dave Gardner, Janet Gardner, and Paul Gallagher
70-plus Singles Trophy - Tom Slemko

BC DAY JITNEY

Members are reminded that the start time for this event on Monday, August 1, is 9:45 (registration) and 10:00 (play begins).  If you are unable to play, please contact Keith Thorpe by phone (250-324-2987) or email (jandkt57@gmail.com).  If you are on the spare list, you may be contacted at the last minute.  Better still, if you can be there at registration time, you may get to play -- all too often we have a no-show or two and are left vacancies.

YES, DEAR! (and SINGLES ADVANTAGE) SUNDAY FUN DAY - AUGUST 21

Form your teams and join in the fun as couples compete for prizes and bragging rights in this popular annual event.  Married couples who are both CLBC members may enter only as a mixed pairs team.  Unattached members may team up with any other member of the opposite gender, and enter as a “singles advantage” pair.

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  No entries will be accepted prior to August 8, when entries will be accepted only in person, from one or both of the team members, in the clubhouse beginning at 9:30am .  Should you arrive prior to that time, beginning at 9:00am , you make take a number.  Be prepared to pay your entry fee of $7 per team (completely refundable if cancelling up to 24 hours prior to the event).

Only the first 16 teams will be guaranteed a place in the Yes, Dear! Fun Day.  Once filled, a wait-list will be established.  Those on the wait-list will be advised, in sequence, of openings and will be included in the competition upon payment of the entry fee.

We have opted for this registration format, as this is such a popular event that, in the past, some have felt excluded because they were not “on the spot” when the sign-up sheet was posted.

In addition to the registration fee each team is to bring an appetizer to share (enough to serve 8).  A suggestion, for singles advantage teams, is that one pay the entry and the other provide the appetizer.  Teams may bring their own beverages or enjoy those offered through the club.  Happy hour and appetizers will follow the three games of play.

CONDITIONS OF PLAY:

1.  Three six-end games of Australian Pairs ( 2-4-2 rotation).  Either player may be skip, but must skip the entire game.
2.  Regular scoring and Laws of the Sport of Bowls apply (unless otherwise indicated below).
3.  Accumulated team results will be carried forward from game to game in this way: total 2 points per win (or 1 per tie or 0 per loss), plus 1 point for each end won, plus score differential to a maximum of  five points per game (plus or minus).
4.  After each game, the two teams with the highest accumulated totals will play in the next game, followed by subsequent pairs in a downward progression.
5.  The overall winners will be the teams with the highest aggregate point accumulation in each of four sections – Winners, Runners-up, Also-Rans, and Maybe-Next-Year.
6.  Burnt ends are played ends; however, the non-offending team will score one point to give them the end.  Should the sixth end be burned, it will not be re-played; and it is scored the same.
7.  No extra end will be played in the event of a tie after six ends.

A MESSAGE FROM MARK TRUEMAN - CLBC MIXED PAIRS (September 1&2)

The Mixed Pairs Tournament is scheduled for September 1 – 2,  2011. It will consist of four 8-end games on Thursday, September 1 and four 8-end games on Friday, September 2. (If there are more than 16 teams, the format of the tournament will be modified to accommodate the number of teams entered in the competition).

Please arrive by 9:00 AM on both days to enable the random draw to take place.

Following play on the first day, teams will be divided into two divisions (“A” Flight and “B” Flight). The winner of the “A” Flight will be the overall club mixed pairs champion. The winner of “B” Flight will receive my usual home-made certificate.

Lunch is not provided, however coffee and light snacks will be available for $5.00 which is the total cost for both days.

A sign-up sheet will be posted in the clubhouse on August 1 and entries will be accepted up to August 22.

Please note that each entry must include a skip and a lead (teams are entered rather than as individuals).

2.  The tournament calendar is also at this address.  You can view it by clicking on "Links", then on "CLBC Tournament Calendar", and then on "Club Tournament Calendar".  Note that this replaces the website address earlier provided to members.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS.  Because drawmaster Alice will not be assessing a fee for 2011 Laddered Pairs, the transfer of fees paid last year will not take place as earlier announced.  Registered members of 2010 Laddered Pairs are entitled to a refund.  Duncan is processing the refunds and many were distributed at Thursday Pairs (July 14).  He still has money for Fall, Gammie, Grant, and Slemko.

GREEN BUCKS.  A motion passed at this month's CLBC board meeting has resulted in the discontinuation of Green Bucks as prizes for club events.  Members holding them are asked to use them by the end of the 2011 season (the last official event being on September 25).  Beyond that date, they will no longer be honored.

FASHION STATEMENT.  With many tournaments and competitions ahead of us, a review of playing attire may be helpful.  You will know from reading our Members' Handbook that several possibilities for wearing apparel are in place and that they vary from situation to situation:
1.  MUFTI.  For regular and league play, participants may wear whatever is comfortable.
2.  WHITES.  For Saturday play, jitneys, tournaments, trophy competitions, and special events whites are encouraged (unless organizers request otherwise).
3.  CLUB COLOURS.  Other than whites, club colours may be worn for these same events.  While our club colour is royal blue, "club colours", by definition, refers to blue club shirts with the club logo.
4.  TEAM UNIFORMS*.  In tournament play, instead of club colours or whites,  all team members may wear matching shirts (any colour but red) with shorts or slacks or skirts of any common colour.

Note that where our club encourages/suggests whites (or club colours or team uniforms -- see above), most other clubs expect whites, club colours, or team uniforms to be worn at their events.

* not included in the Members' Handbook

SHIRTS AND DECALS.  Need a club shirt?  Want personalized decals for your bowls?  Order sheets for both items are now on the playing board.  You have until July 16 to indicate your selections.

MONDAY MORNING LADDER.   By popular demand the Monday Morning Ladder will continue for a total of 15 weeks, ending on Monday, August 29th. If a player chooses to drop out after the original 10 weeks (July 18th) then new players may enter the ladder at the BOTTOM.  Anyone interested in joining (if there are vacancies) should contact Alice Trueman (truemana@telus.net) as soon as possible to be placed on the waiting list. First to contact Alice will be first on the list for vacancies, and so on.

THURSDAY EVENING PAIRS LEAGUE.  The first game of the Summer Session will be on Thursday, July 14th. Mark Trueman (truemanm@telus.net) encourages all new and novice bowlers to participate. If you are a novice, you will be paired with an experienced skip. Please contact Mark by e-mail or by signing the sign-up sheet in the clubhouse by Thursday, July 7th. (Please indicate if you are a novice so that you may be paired with an experienced bowler).  Games are scheduled for 6:00 PM. However, if there is sufficient demand, there may be a second draw at 4:00 PM.

COACHING SESSIONS (submitted by Ross Bulley)
Monday, July 11 - 1:00 pm  1. Measuring - some simple, some complex.
Monday, July  18 - 1:00 pm  2. Basic protocol for starting a game and what jobs does each player have during the game,  where "can you stand" and where "should you stand", when can the mat be moved, etc.

We will discuss what people would like reviewed at the sessions and plan accordingly. Coaching sessions, including going over problems which may have  developed with one's delivery, will continue on Mondays at 1:00 pm if there is sufficient interest.  If interested, please email me at rjbulley@xplornet.com and I will put your name down. For some sessions like measuring techniques, there will be a limited number of spaces.

GAMES REPORT (submitted by Janet Gardner, Games Chair)
Late June and July are proving to be busy months for our lawn bowlers.  Martin Liddell and David Gardner played in the prestigious Jubilee Pacific Pairs over a three day period, playing 16 end games.  They came in second and only lost by one shot, the last one.  Good show.

June 17 was the first Sunday Fun Day and everyone had lots of fun.  Of course, that is a requirement on Fun Days!  Thanks to the Lockes for organizing the day.

The Canada Day Jitney was a wild affair.  Sixty-four people signed up with two spares in the wings.  Everybody got to play.  The costume contest was won by Marvin Thorgeirson  C:\Users\Janet\Pictures\Marvin.jpg.  Tommy Traynor was arrested C:\Users\Janet\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\WLMDSS.tmp\WLM4B26.tmp\IMG_1522.JPGfor impersonating something?  There were loads of winners for the morning and afternoon games.  Tom and Litza did a great job organizing the day.  We had a beautiful Canada Day Cake C:\Users\Janet\Pictures\Canada Day Cake.JPG…We are all looking forward to next year’s fun and frolicking on  Canada Day.

Coming Events for Games include;

1.      July 8th will begin a new group of games for our club.  This is a Friday evening bowl.  The first one is on July 8th and will be a BBQ and Bowl.  Play begins at 4 PM, participants bring their own meat and the rest will be supplied.  The cost is $3.  Decisions about the remaining three games July 15, 22 and 29th will be decided by the players on Friday evening.  See the poster for full details.

UPDATE - JUNE 18

It was an exciting week at the club.  As well as our regularly-scheduled activities, we hosted the Ladies' 2-Bowl 6-Pack Tournament; completed the Jim Lee Trophy event; and, in conjunction with our Thursday Evening Pairs, attended a Kangaroo Court *.  Read on for more on these and for what lies ahead:

1.  HENSELITE BOWLS.  The Henselite representative for North Island, Lynn Chwartacki, will be at our club on Monday, June 20 from 11:15 and remaining after Laddered Pairs.  If you are interested in new bowls, bowling shoes, measures, or other bowling gear, this is your opportunity!

2.  KEEP COOL NECKTIES.  Anyone interested in purchasing one, please sign the order sheet on the playing board.   They are made in club colours be a craft group at the seniors' centre and available for $7.50 (a fund-raiser for the centre).  Simply soak briefly in water and fasten around your neck.  Get 'em before it's hot!

3.  SUNDAY FUN DAY.  Afternoon Bowls and Tea will be held tomorrow, June 19 at 1:00pm.  Arrive early to register so that bowling can begin on time.  Tea, sandwiches, and goodies will be served following play.  $6.00 entry fee -- correct change is appreciated.

4.  2-BOWL 6-PACK (submitted by Betty Locke).

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Ladies' Two Bowl Six Pack was the Joan Appleton team. Ably assisted by third, Marilyn Clark and lead, Bev Myers the team was the clear winner over the two days of play involving 13 short games. To have a Cowichan team the winner is the icing on the cake for CLBC. For the last couple of years visiting teams have taken the trophy. This gives the Appleton team an automatic entry into the competition next year.

Other winners were the Sullivan team from Lake Hill in Victoria who placed second and the Watt team from Juan de Fuca who was third.

The day's events were organized by Duncan and Betty Locke. Ross Bulley did the Umpire duties and Judith Bulley and her kitchen team did the food and hospitality. There were many compliments given to our club for staging a very enjoyable tournament and many teams hope to win a spot in the lottery for this event next year.

5.  JIM LEE TROPHY.  We now have a winner!  The second day of play for this competition, some weeks ago. was rained out.  Since then, those still in the running scrambled to re-schedule games to complete the event.  The final was played on Friday and the winning team was Mark Trueman, Don Unger, and Addie Bentzen, defeating Tom Clark, Mildred Butler, and Gillian Nicholson.  Who is Addie Bentzen you might ask?  She is one of our five novices.  What a start for her bowling career!

6.  EQUIPMENT STORAGE.  You will notice that the equipment room has been re-vamped so that, now, the green mats can be hung more easily.  We thank Mike Hanson for making this possible.  It will work best if mats are single-folded before placing them over the bar.

* Kangaroo Court?  Curious? See Janet Gardner for details.

------------------------------------------

UPDATE - JUNE 12

After a slow, and sometimes delayed, beginning, the bowling season has almost revved up to normal speed!  Regular play  and competitive leagues are well under way.  A couple of tournaments have also been held at CLBC -- the Jim Lee Triples and the 2-Bowl Classic.  Next week the green will be taken up by the Ladies 2-Bowl 6-Pack on Tuesday and Wednesday (June 14 and 15).  Bowlers from all over the island (and Powell River, as well) will compete in this popular tournament.  Plan to drop by  to support the three teams representing our club.

While we haven't had the weather we are accustomed to for this time of year, rain, for the most part, hasn't dampened the spirits of those who regularly show up.  I did make the comment that I hadn't expected to dress the same for bowls as I had for curling the previous six months!

The next club event will be a week today -- Sunday Fun Day:  Afternoon Tea and Bowls. We can still accommodate a half-dozen or so players.  Do sign up soon, as registration will be capped at 42, by next Friday.  Following play, beginning at 1:00pm; tea, sandwiches, and cookies will be served.  Registration:  $6.

A sign-up sheet for the Canada Day jitney is now on the playing board.

CLUB BOWLS

The collection of club bowls is occasionally augmented by sets being donated.  Such was the case recently when June Barnes' bowls were given to the club.  The bowls, bag, and extra equipment were in the clubhouse for some time; but when the board last met and discussed how they should be dealt with, they were nowhere to be found.  If anyone knows of their whereabouts, please advise any member of the board.

GAMES REPORT (submitted by Janet Gardner)

June has been a busy month.  The Two Bowl Classic Open was played on June 8 and it was a sensation.  The winning team was skipped by Joyce Gammie.  Her team included Jim Brown (wearing neon yellow), Glen Middleton and Maria Ridewood. The Second Place team was skipped by Janet Gardner with Alice Trueman, Carol McCoy and Gord Fall.  Gordie created and developed the format for the Two Bowl Classic and it was a solid hit.  We even had an international player, Ivor, all the way from Wales,  playing on one of the teams. There was an emergency hospitalization of one of the team members from the Vic West team and they needed two replacements at the last minute.  Cec Poznecov generously agreed to play for their team.  Ivor, the Welshman was the other volunteer.  There were eight teams playing and six of them were CLBC teams.  I think we all went home happy and with money jingling in our pockets.  Trudy Fall kept us fed and happy all day long.

There was a Novice Tournament on June 10 at the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club.  We had two novices participating, Addi Bentzen and Dorothy Madden.  Janet Gardner accompanied as a helper.  This tournament is part of Bowls South Island (BSI) and it allows women novice players an opportunity to play in a pairs game and be responsible for all aspects of play with coaches and helpers at each end to assist as needed.  Everyone had a great time and learned a lot.

Upcoming events are Sunday Fun Day, June 19, and the Canada Day Jitney, July 1.  Men’s day resumes on Wednesday, June 22. Check the board in the clubhouse for details and signup sheets.

Please go to the Google calendar site, http://retirement-things.com/clbccalendar.html , and check it against your paper calendars for any changes or updates.  There are extra copies of the calendars on the counter in the clubhouse.  Please help yourself to one if you haven’t gotten one already.

Thanks so much to all of the volunteers who have been so helpful and generous.  It has made everything run so smoothly and we’ve had lots of fun.  Janet Gardner, Games Chair

CLBC 2-BOWL 6-PACK PLAYOFF (submitted by Betty Locke)

Thursday, June 9th, was the day four CLBC teams played off to determine the Cowichan club’s representatives for this very popular ladies triples event, the 2-Bowl 6-Pack. Originally there were six teams entered, but by playoff time, two had withdrawn leaving four teams vying for the three spots allotted to our club. After many exciting games and tie-breakers, the teams emerging were:

Betty Locke, Pat Unger, Carol Hourigan
Maria Ridewood, LItza Slemko, Phyl Ingram
Joan Appleton, Marilyn Clark, Bev Myers

The Two Bowl Six Pack will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14th and 15th. Come out to cheer on the Cowichan teams. Rinks will be coming from North and South Island and the list even includes a rink from Powell River.

PRE-OPENING UPDATE - APRIL 29

OPENING DAY April 30 --
Play is scheduled to begin at 11:00am.  The green is still under close scrutiny, and weather conditions may be a factor for play or not.  Bring a lunch and plan, at least, to socialize!  Plan, as well, to be there for Sunday's Open House beginning at 11am.

CLUB CALENDAR -- The CLBC website calendar has now been updated.  Should you notice any errors or omissions, please let me know so that they may be corrected  (duncanofduncan@shaw.ca).

The evening singles’ league is open to all members.  The maximum number of players is 32.  The final number must be divisible by 2.   The competition comprises weekly play on Tuesdays commencing on May 10 at 4P.M. or 6 P.M.  Pre-registration is required.  Contact Janet Gardner by phone or e-mail.  Players may register for the full season or for the spring session (May 10- June 28) or the summer session (July 5- August 23).

Protocol and rules for play:

1.        The Laws of the Sport of Bowls, Crystal Mark Edition, will apply (except as noted herein).

2.       On the first end, the winner of a coin toss may choose to take, or give up, the mat.   On subsequent ends the winner of the previous end must take the mat.

3.       All games will be to 15 points.

4.       Start time is 4 P. M. or 6 P.M. depending on which time you are scheduled to play.  The teams playing at 4 P.M. will have 2 hours to play their game and must have game completed by 6 P.M. You may start as soon as all players are available and ready to start as long as the rink is available.  There will be no bell starts and no timed finish for 6 P.M. games.

5.       Burnt ends are not replayed.

6.       If a player is late, the opponent will score one point for each five minutes or portion thereof from the 4 P.M. or 6 P.M. start time.  The game is forfeited after ½ hour.

7.         As a courtesy to others, participants are discouraged from re-scheduling games unless it is absolutely necessary; however, a player may re-schedule two games per half season (beyond which matches will be forfeited).  Players must contact the League coordinator and declare a game as forfeited. This should be done as far in advance as possible and the player must notify their opponent. Scoring will be recorded on the cards provided, which must be signed and placed in the container at the completion of each draw (or at the next draw if re-scheduled ).  Scoreboards will be used, as other player may be interested in the progress of games on other rinks.

8.        Should a player be unable to complete a half-season, a ruling will be made by the games chairs.

9.       Games not played prior to the final draw for each half-season will be forfeited by the team requesting the change.

10.   Cumulative scoring will be based on 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss.  Results will be posted in the clubhouse.

The league trophy will be awarded to the player with the highest points total in the round robin over the complete season.  Should a tie exist, the winner of the head-to-head match is the overall winner.  Should head-to-head not break a three-way tie, a play-off will be necessary.

FROM YOUR GAMES CHAIR
(submitted by Janet Gardner)

Singles League runs for its full season, May 10-August 23, or players can sign up for Session 1, May 10-June 28, or session 2, July 5-August 23. The people signed up for the full season will be the only ones eligible to win the trophy. The singles originally had been limited to 16 players. This is being opened up for anyone interested in signing up. The maximum would be 32 players. David Gardner is helping me set up a way for us to play the season with as few byes as possible. There will be some games played at 4 PM and the rest played at 6 PM. The guidelines for the Singles League will be available on the bulletin board late this week. You can sign up on the sheet provided at the clubhouse until the 3 PM, Monday, May 1, 2011. Please indicate your interest in playing the full season or 1st or 2nd session only. If you have any questions please call me at 250-748-1867 or e-mail me at jangardner@shaw.ca.

I am still looking for members to organize a few tournaments and one jitney. Give me a call at the above number and I can match you up with something that interests you. Keith called and volunteered to do a Jitney. That just made my day! Thank you to the many people that have offered assistance or asked for particular jobs. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated. Give me a call if you are interested. Janet Gardner, Games Chair and Singles League Co-ordinator:
748-1867 or by email jangardner@shaw.ca

There will be a master list of all of the CLBC tournaments and events and names of the people who will be organizing them as soon as the full roster is completed. I am so pleased with the positive response from all of the people I have contacted to ask for assistance with the upcoming season of bowling. Our first tournament is the Jim Lee on May 13,14, this will be organized by Tommy Traynor, Clint Bailey and Paul Gallagher. The sign up sheet will be posted soon. The Victoria Day Jitney will be on May 23 and it will be organized by Mildred and Alan Butler. These events are coming soon so check the board for the sign up sheets early in May. Have a fun season of bowling.

MID-WINTER UPDATE - JANUARY 23, 2011

FAREWELLS

Beth Rustulka, a CLBC founding member, died last December. Beth was very active in the club in its early years, particularly in a fund-raising capacity (canvassing for donations and writing grant applications), as well as being a regular on the green. She also began the club’s first scrap book and photo album. Failing health resulted in her discontinuation of membership a few seasons ago.

Prior to her retirement she worked as a justice of the peace and court registrar in Duncan, earning her a nomination for an RCMP commendation in 1988. She was later employed by a local newspaper, the Citizen. Following that, community involvement became a major focus. In 2001 she received a Cowichan Seniors Advisory Award, and in 2002 a Cowichan volunteer spirit award nomination.

Her memory will linger on, as her bowls were donated to the club for the junior program.

(Thanks, Betty James, for the above information.)

We are saddened, as well, to learn of the death of Arlene Jaskow on January 13. While unable to bowl, herself, she was an enthusiastic booster of CLBC. As a social member she was often at the club where she cheered on husband, Roy, and sister, Carol McCoy. She also assisted in the clubhouse and was an accomplished photographer, providing a visual record of many of the club’s activities.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

On December 10 about seventy members and guests gathered at the Cowichan Valley Inn for the club’s annual Christmas luncheon. It was, indeed, a happy occasion! A delicious meal was followed by official presentation of trophies to winners of our many club competitions.  (Photos are posted in GALLERY.)

The trophies and their winners are:

Carpet bowling continues in the clubhouse through April.

NOVEMBER 21 UPDATE

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

Members still have time to purchase tickets for the annual luncheon on December 10 at the Cowichan Valley Inn (11:30am).  Tickets are $24 and may be purchased from Bev Myers (250-748-3305) or at the clubhouse on Wednesday, November 24 at 1:00pm.  Please arrange for your tickets by the end of the month as the hotel will require a final count.

BOWLS SOUTH ISLAND

Over the summer, two teams from CLBC participated in the BSI Friday Men's Triples Competition.  Eighteen teams from many of the BSI clubs competed, and, in the end, the Cowichan team of Martin Liddell, Roy Jaskow, and Tom Slemko (with spares Jim Irvine and Gordon Fall) finished in first place!  Congratulations, guys!  Our second team (Ross Bulley, Duncan Locke, and Dave Gardner -- with spares Mark Trueman and Keith Thorpe -- finished ninth (but still in the prize money!).

COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Many of you will remember a workshop at our club offered by Hiren Bhartu two summers ago.  He is a member of the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club and a member of the national men's team which represented Canada recently at the Commonwealth Games in India.

To wish him success and to assist financially, CLBC sent him a modest donation.  He has recently reported back on his experience:

To the Executive of Cowichan Lawn Bowling Club,

I would like to thank the executive and the membership of the Cowichan Lawn Bowling for the donation in kind to help towards my travel to Delhi to represent Canada .  I was very touched by this as yours was the only club that came forward.

The tournament did not go very well for the Canadians, as we did not medal, but the Commonwealth experience is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Please give my thanks to all the members at your club and wish them a good bowling season for the coming year and for the future. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help in anyway to help members enjoy this game more.

Kind Regards

Hirendra Bhartu

NOVEMBER 8 UPDATE

It is now two weeks since the club's Annual General Meeting.  Two important agenda items were passed by those in attendance (more than sixty in all!):

1.  FEE INCREASE.  For the first time in the club's thirteen seasons, the membership has voted on and approved a fee increase.  The additional ten dollars per member is intended to cover increased costs of operation and to accumulate a reserve fund for high-cost repair, maintenance, and replacement items.  The basic fee, beginning in 2011 will be $160 per member.  (NOTE:  Should our fees be subject to HST, that would be in addition to the increase.)

2.  ELECTION OF OFFICERS:  The slate of officers, as presented by the nominating committee, was approved by the membership:
President:  Ross Bulley                          Directors (two-year term)
Vice-President:  Pat Unger                       Mike Hanson, Marilyn Boechler, Janet Gardner,
Past President:  Joyce Gammie                     and Jim Irvine
Secretary:  Betty Locke                          Directors (completing two-year term)
Treasurer:  Bruce Watson                         Judith Bulley and Bev Myers

JUNE BARNES
Betty and I were shocked and saddened to learn of her death while we were travelling.  The loss was even more poignant in terms of our friendship with Ray and June for close to forty years.

Beyond her keen participation in lawn bowls, June was an accomplished artist and will be missed by many friends and associates in that community, as well.

A memorial service is scheduled for November 20th at 2:00pm. at the Native Cultural Centre.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON
Do plan to attend the annual Christmas luncheon at the Cowichan Valley Inn beginning at 11:30 on December 10.  Please call Bev Myers (748-3305) to arrange for tickets ($24 each -- guests are welcome).

CLBC'S AUCKLAND CONNECTION
When we disembarked in New Zealand, Kenny Moran was at the cruise terminal to greet us!  The sight-seeing tour that followed included about half a dozen lawn bowling greens, and that was a mere drop in the bucket!  Auckland has 88 bowls clubs and North Harbour (across the bridge where Kenny lives) has another 38.

Kenny belongs to three clubs and bowls most days of the week.  On our second day there, we met him at the end of a day of tournament play.  The following day we arrived in time to watch him go down to defeat in a fours tournament.  Unfortunately we had left the country before, on the next day, he and his partner won a juniors' pairs tournament (juniors are those who have played five or fewer seasons).  We had met his partner, David Pierce, and he is pictured below.

We even had a chance to throw some bowls and the greens are just as fast as we remembered from both New Zealand and Australia.  Thankfully Betty and I played decently and those members watching (all the while giving Kenny a bad time) were quite complimentary to us.

Kenny was interested in news of our club members, and he keeps up to date through his sister and our website.  He looks forward to returning to Canada to continue his Cowichan experience.  How many clubs have a member that far away?  (Thanks, Kenny, from Betty and Duncan for your hospitality, your tour guiding, and your limo service!)

Kenny plays both piano (West End Club)  ...  and lawn bowls! (Berkenhead Club)

SEPTEMBER 21 UPDATE

REMINDERS:
September 26 - Closing Jitney and Sunday Fun Day (details on playing board)
Sept25 - Oct8 - Clubhouse Crew:  Keith Thorpe, Ruth Liddell, Betty James
October 26 - Annual General Meeting -- CLBC Clubhouse, 1pm.
December 10 - Cowichan Valley Inn -- 11:30am

HIATUS:
This update marks the beginning of a period of silence for our website.  Between now and the Spring General Meeting no regular messages will appear.  Occasionally, items of general interest may be brought to your attention, usually by email.

Your games chairs are "bailing out" as of tomorrow.  They will return in time for the AGM; but, just prior to their return, they will visit with Kenny Moran in Auckland, New Zealand.  Many have asked to express good wishes to him.  He will likely do the same, in return!

CLOSING JITNEY SUNDAY FUN DAY:
In spite of its name, this fun day includes no small measure of sadness, as it is the official end of our bowling season.  To mark the period of mourning from then until spring, in the past, participants have worn black on  this occasion.  Of course, accents of grey and white were acceptable, as well.  See what you can do to carry on this tradition.  Any questions?  Tom and Litza Slemko are coordinating this event.

REGULAR OPEN PLAY:
After a week of recovery from major surgery, our green is again usable.  While the surface is somewhat slower than we are accustomed to, the sand is merging with the grass seemingly with little threat to the finish on our bowls.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be the first day for open bowling for an entire week!  Thursday will be Ladies' Day; but having missed so much green time recently, they surely won't mind if some men show up.  Friday will be open bowling as well; and Saturday will be the last regular day for Brown Bag Bowls (11am).

Beyond closing day, members may continue to bowl as long as weather and green conditions permit.  Play is not organized, but showing up about 1:00pm might result in meeting others to have a roll-up.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE:
A full complement of eight mixed triples teams arrived from Parksville today (Tuesday) to take part in our third annual exchange.  While we put up a good fight, the visiting teams prevailed 9 games to 7.  However, we are not ashamed of our effort, and we will practise, practise, practise for our next meeting -- at Parksville, September 2011.

AGM:
Highlights of the meeting will be the election of officers for the coming year and the approval of the 2011 budget.  The meeting begins at 1:00pm on Tuesday, October 26.  Tickets will be available for our Christmas Luncheon scheduled for December 10 at the Cowichan Valley Inn.  Following lunch, door prizes will be presented and the winners of club trophies will be recognized.  Cost:  $24.00.

COMPETITORS' CIRCLE:
2010 Turney Twos
- A rain delay resulted in this competition being played in a single day.  The qualifiers from two mini-round-robins played off with the Don Unger/Pete Williams pair defeating Dorothy Hanson and Clint Bailey.  Ironically, the final was almost as rainy as the first day's attempt at play!
Champ of Champs - CLBC had a winner in this Bowls South Island championship.  Trudy Fall won the Women's Novice event.  Eddie McEachan came close, as well, reaching the semi-finals in men's novice play.
Thursday Evening Singles - While the final draws had to be cancelled due to weather and green conditions, the three players in contention were allowed to finish play to determine a winner.   Ultimately, Ross Bulley completed the season with two losses, thereby finishing just ahead of Tom Slemko and Gord Fall with three losses each.
Monday Laddered Pairs and Tuesday Evening Pairs will have to wait until the end of next April for completion.  Weather and greens maintenance were both factors in causing this delay.

LABOUR DAY JITNEY
Members have until Saturday morning to register for this event.  Check-in time is 8:45 with play to begin at 9:00.  Three six-end games will be followed by lunch.  The format is:  Mystery Team Triples.  Trish and Ron Peebles are playing a major role in organizing this day (and they leave for Calgary the following morning!)

2010 TURNEY TWOS
On Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, this year's novices will be paired with slightly more-experienced players to compete for the Turney Twos Trophy.

LADIES' QUADDIE
The format for Ladies' Day on September 9 will be a quaddie tournament beginning at 8:45.  Advance registration is required, as it can be played only with multiples of eight.  Presently it sits at 16, but four or so more would bring it to 24.  You have until Monday to sign up.  The cost is $3 and each participant is to bring a dish to share at the true pot luck lunch which will follow.

PARKSVILLE EXCHANGE
On Tuesday, September 21, members of the Parksville club will visit CLBC for our annual exchange.  A sign-up sheet will be posted on Saturday, September 11.  Should we have more than 24 names, a draw will be held to determine those who will play.  This draw will be made at Saturday play on the18th.

SATURDAY PLAY
As mentioned a few weeks ago, Saturday play will revert to an 11am start from tomorrow (September 4) through September 25.  A lunch break will follow eight ends and the remaining six ends of the game will be played after that.

CLOSING JITNEY
While members may bowl well beyond the end of September (depending upon weather and green conditions) organized play finishes at the end of this month.  The concluding event is the Closing Jitney and Sunday Fun Day on September 26.  Tom and Litza Slemko have agreed to organize this occasion; so watch for further information.  (Your games chairs, Duncan and Betty, will be completing their season earlier than that, as they will be away for a month from September 22.)

AGM
The CLBC annual general meeting will be held in the club house at 1:00pm on October 26.  Election of officers for next season will be held at that time.  A nominating committee is presently working on a list of nominees for various positions on the board.  Please say, "Yes," should you be approached and asked to share your talent and expertise in the club's operation, the wheels of which are lubricated by volunteerism.

CLUB TROPHY COMPETITION
August has been filled with competitions and playoffs for various trophies and championships:
Women's Singles - Hazel Grant
Men's Singles - Tom Slemko
Women's Novice Singles - Trudy Fall
Men's Novice Singles - Eddie McEachan
These four will represent CLBC at Bowls South Islands' Champ of Champs competition the weekend of September 10, 11, and 12.

The club first annual Mixed Pairs Championship was held this week.  Fourteen teams competed with  four teams advancing to the semi-finals:  Gillian and Gordon Nicholson, Ross Bulley and Joan Appleton, Betty Locke and Mark Trueman, and David Lovell and Cindy Robson.  In the final, David and Cindy were victorious over Betty and Mark and were presented with the trophy.  At the conclusion of the event, we said farewell to our newest full member (he joined last Tuesday), Kenny Moran, who is returning to his home in New Zealand.  He plans to return for a full season, hopefully next year.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES
The annual battle of the sexes competition was hosted by the ladies this year.  Janet Gardner and Alice Trueman did a bang-up job of organizing the event and employing a new format.  Prior to lunch the men's teams and the women's teams played amongst themselves to determine the strongest team to play off in the two-team battle following lunch.  The men (Tom Traynor, Mark Trueman, Clint Bailey -- our most recent novice) prevailed, defeating Maria Ridewood, Mildred Butler, and Judith Bulley in the final.  Next year the men will be hosts, with cooking lessons, perhaps, a pre-requisite for the day.

Aug31 & Sept1 - CLBC Pairs Championship

WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
August 4 and 5 were the playoff dates for the women's singles club championship.  Eight were entered and after round robin play Betty Locke, Hazel Grant, Litza Slemko, and Janet Gardner finished in first, second, third, and fourth places, respectively.  Semi-final play resulted in Betty and Hazel playing for the trophy.  A closely fought 11-point match ended with Hazel breaking the 10-10 tie for the victory.  She will represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs in Victoria next month.

SEVENTY-PLUS TOURNAMENT
Eighteen members registered for the over-seventy club championship competition, and by noon of the second day Keith Thorpe, Tommy Traynor, Tom Slemko, and Ross Bulley had advanced to play in the semi-finals.  The large gallery present was treated to two excellent matches, with Ross Bulley and Tom Slemko continuing to the final.  Early on it looked as though it would be a short game; however, Ross managed to turn a 8-0 deficit into a 10-9 lead before Tom scored two to take the title.  We were pleased that Ted Vivian (a CLBC life member and sponsor of the 70-Plus trophy) was there to watch the game and to present the trophy.

BC DAY JITNEY
This holiday jitney was a great success!  Sixteen triples teams participated in a yardstick competition and the three teams amassing the most points were:  first place -- Ross Bulley, Pat Unger, Pete Williams; second place -- David Lovell, Marilyn Boechler/Bill Cleary (sharing), Paul Gallagher; and third place -- Mark Trueman, Janet Gardner, Marge Sterling.  Draws were made for consolation prizes, as well.

The organizing team of Joyce Gammie, Marilyn Boechler, and Bill and Barb Cleary are to be congratulated for such a fine day.  The hamburger barbecue was enjoyed by all!

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Entries are still being accepted for the men's singles competition, August 11 and 12.  The winner will be our club champion and our representative to Bowls South Islands Champ of Champs in Victoria in September.  The novice champions will be determined later this month.

YES, DEAR!
The sign-up sheet for this very popular event was posted Monday morning and was filled in record time.  You may still add your team to the waiting list.

For the event, all teams must be mixed pairs (married couples MUST play together, while singles have the advantage of pairing with any other single member of the opposite gender).  The entry fee is $3 and each team is responsible for providing an appetizer (to serve about eight) for the happy hour that follows.  For happy hour bring your beverage of choice or obtain one from the club.  Registration for the Sunday Fun Day event is at 1:30 on August 15.

MEMBERS PLAYING AWAY
At the recent Gold Bowl Tournament in Nanaimo, CLBC club members Mark Trueman, and Gord and Trudy Fall placed second overall.  Some of our members are also participating in Holiday Week competitions at the Juan de Fuca Club this week.

ACCOLADES
Our notice board now has a section entitled "Accolades".  This area is for messages of congratulation, photos, and newspaper articles relative to achievements of our members when they compete elsewhere.  Feel free to add pertinent items.

August 4&5 - Women's Singles Club Championship (sign-up sheet on playing board)

OPEN PLAY
Several changes in scheduling have resulted in modification of open play during the week.  Drop-in play is available at 10am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings.  Saturday play is open to all members, as well (see below).  These exceptions, however, do apply:  Ladies' Day play will take precedence on Friday mornings July 30 and August 6&13, as the Thursdays will be taken up by competitions.

GUM ALERT
Recently we have had several incidents of discarded chewing gum causing problems. These are some examples:  it was stuck to a player’s shoe while bowling on the green; it was found adhered to our new doormat inside the Clubhouse; it was found jamming a caster on rake; it was found on the kitchen floor.

In response to this issue the Board requests that those persons who chew gum while on CLBC premises dispose of their used product responsibly.  Further incidents may result in the banning of gum-chewing within club premises.

Your cooperation is appreciated.

SATURDAY PLAY
Beginning July 24 and continuing through August 28, Saturday play will begin at 10:00am.  A lunch break will follow ten ends of play.  After lunch, play will continue for four more ends.  Should the heat be too intense, teams may agree not to complete the game.  In September the Saturday start time will revert to 11:00am.

70+ TOURNAMENT
The club championship singles tournament for members seventy or older will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, July 28 and 29.  Tournament format (number and length of games) will depend upon registration.  Entries will close Monday noon on July 26.  No registration fee  (bring a bag lunch).  Sign-up sheet on playing board.

BC DAY JITNEY
On Monday, August 2, the holiday jitney will begin with registration at 10:00am.  Following two four-end games, a hamburger barbecue lunch will be served.  (NOTE:  Those with dietary considerations, as for any occasion where food is served,  should advise one of the organizing committee members of food issues that may be of concern -- Joyce Gammie, Marilyn Boechler, Bill Cleary.  Play will continue after lunch with two more four-end games.  Cost:  $6.00 (includes lunch and prizes).  Sign-up sheet on playing board.

LADIES' SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Open to all women members of the club, this playoff (August 4&5) will determine the club champion and the right to represent CLBC at the Champ of Champs tournament at Juan de Fuca in September.  Tournament format (number and length of games) will depend upon registration.   No registration fee (bring a bag lunch).  Sign-up sheet on playing board.

GO FOR THE JUGULAR
A full green of players competed in the July Sunday Fun Day on the 18th.  A variation on the game of cut-throat was played with every contestant being a team of one.  In the end the top performers were David Lovell, Betty Locke, Phyl Ingram, and Judith Lovell.  Mike Hanson was Mr. Congeniality, and several draws were held for hidden prizes.  It was a good day -- even the many runners-up expressed no complaints.

NEW COMPETITIONS AT CLBC
In addition to the new format for the Ken Armour Tournament, two other events have been introduced:

1.  CLASSIC TWO-BOWL TOURNAMENT.  Thirty-two competitors played fours, pairs, and singles in pursuit of cash prizes over a single day that concluded with a barbecue.

The winning teams were Tom Slemko, Judith Lovell, Cindy Robson, Ruth Liddell (1st place) and Gord Fall, Wayne Grant, Phyl Ingram, John Miller (2nd).

Singles champs were Tom Slemko and Gord Fall with Ruth Liddell and Hazel Grant the second chance singles winners.

The organizing committee of Trudy Fall, Gord Fall, Alice Trueman, and Mark Trueman did a commendable job in making this "pilot project" the success that it was.

2.  LADDERED PAIRS.  Last Monday play began in a laddered pairs competition on Monday mornings.  A full complement of thirty-two will play weekly until mid-September, the winners being those who accumulate the most points over eight weeks.

For the first time, participants were invited to evaluate new events.  Both the Ken Armour and the Two-Bowl garnered very positive feedback which will provide the games committee with valuable information for future planning.  Member input is always much-appreciated.

MEMBERS PLAYING AWAY
Nine CLBC members recently competed in the BC pairs championships at Juan de Fuca.  Overall the women fared better than the men (Dave Gardner/Ross Bulley, Gord Fall/Mark Trueman, Martin Liddell/Tom Slemko) with Trudy Fall/Mary Prade(Nanaimo) reaching the quarter finals.  The other women's team was Cindy Robson/Maria Ridewood.  Congratulations to them all for a strong representation from our club!

Nolan Gierc (paired with Craig Wilson, Burnside) won the Central Saanich Invitational Tournament in mid-June.  Gord Fall and Mark Trueman were semi-finalists in that event, as well.  Nolan was also part of a 4th-place finishing fours team in Vancouver on July 5.

In junior play, Essa Gierc won second-place silver in the BC Juniors championship.

Fourteen teams competed over two days with each team playing seven round robin games to determine four winners who advanced to the playoffs.  The winner of each section then faced the runner-up from the other section.  In semi-final play first-place Sprinters (Jim Brown, Wayne Grant, Dorothy Hanson) defeated Measure for Measure (Duncan Locke, Maria Ridewood, Phyl Ingram) and The Real McCoys (Keith Thorpe, Carol McCoy, Jill Thorpe) won over section winner Ace of Hearts (David Lovell, Judith Lovell, Gillian Nicholson).  In an extremely well-bowled final match, the Sprinters team emerged as the champions and were presented the Ken Armour trophy.

CANADA DAY JITNEY
A larger-than-anticipated registration resulted in some late modifications in both the catering and the planning areas; however, the event went off almost seamlessly.  Fifty-six players enjoyed four games of fours, many having not previously played fours.  Purchase of Second Chance insurance helped many players who badly needed the third bowl they were accustomed to.  That purchase also gave the buyers chances to win a cash draw at the end of play.  Three lucky people received twenty, ten, and five dollars.  That's a lot of extra bowls at three chances for a dollar!

What a patriotic sight (and site) our green was with everyone kitted out in red and white!  The overall winners in the two groups (those who moved to the left after each 4-end game and those who moved right) and the most-supportive team were recognized. The prizes went to the best in RED and BLUE,  and to BOO-HOO.  The embarrassing thing is, I have misplaced the sheet on which they were recorded.
Winners, please identify yourselves, and you will be recognized in the next update!

CANADA DAY JITNEY
Registration is already over forty and the maximum number to play is forty-eight.  Please register by this coming Saturday.

KEN ARMOUR TRIPLES
This mixed triples tournament is open to all club members.  In an effort to increase participation and to encourage members of all skill levels to be involved, the Games Committee is proposing guidelines for team selection.  This will not only increase registration, it should also result in teams that are more evenly balanced in experience and ability.

Members will select and enter their own teams  using these guidelines:
1.  All teams will be mixed.
2.  Each team will include at least one player who is a 2010, 2009, or 2008 novice.
3.  "Accomplished" players (where "accomplished" means having your name on a tournament or league trophy either within CLBC or in any other venue) who enter must  fulfill these conditions:  (a) a team may include only one player who has three or more "accomplishments", (b) if two accomplished players are on one team their combined total "accomplishments" may only be two or three.
4.  Members who are neither "accomplished" nor "novices" can fill other positions.

A registration sheet will be available to sign up teams below the poster (which will include a list of members in each of the categories).  Games Committee members (Duncan Locke, Betty Locke, Mark Trueman, Marilyn Boechler, Joyce Gammie) will be happy to answer questions.

CLUB LOGO VESTS
We are looking into the possibility of having CLBC fleece vests.  Club members who are interested in having club blue vests with the Cowichan logo embroidered on them are asked to sign up on the sheet in the club house.  We need to know how many are interested in order to establish a price.  We may even be able to arrange customized sizing.

2-BOWL CLASSIC
A proposal for another in-house tournament has been reviewed by the Games Committee, and it is now scheduled for July 12.  The format includes games of fours, pairs, and singles.  The cost will be $6 to cover prizes and incidental costs.  Please refer to the poster on the playing board for complete information.

AFTERNOON TEA AND BOWLS
Thirty-six bowlers gathered for tea and bowls at Sunday Fun Day's June event.  Twelve randomly drawn teams, six red and six blue, faced each other for three six-end games and then enjoyed tea and fellowship prior to the awarding of prizes.  The top teams were Tommy Traynor (Judith Bulley, Beth Driedger) and Ross Bulley (Mike Hanson, Mary Nelson).  The team of Judith Lovell, Marilyn Clark, and Pat Unger was recognized for being the most supportive.

The next Sunday Fun Day, Breakfast Bowls, will be on July 18.

LADIES' TWO-BOWL SIX-PACK TOURNAMENT
On June 15 and 16, our club hosted its only open tournament which attracted ten triples teams of women players from up- and down-island.  They joined four teams from CLBC to complete over two days of play.  The complete round robin of thirteen six-end games resulted in a Parksville club victory for Debbie Lawrence, Dianne Proctor, and Londie Hayes.  Rosemary Waldie, Bev Johnson, and Neva Hawkes from Victoria West finished second, while Jan MacNaughton, Roberta Stets, and Francine Brunskil, also from Parksville, were third.

Again the tournament was deemed to be a great success and many teams have already entered for 2011.

UPDATE FOR JUNE 6

SUNDAY FUN DAY.
Next Sunday, June 13, will be our first Sunday Fun Day of the season.  The theme is Afternoon Bowls and Tea.  Arrive at 12:45 for a one o'clock start.  Tea (sandwiches and cookies) will be served following three six-end games.  The $5.00 entry fee covers refreshments and prizes.  The maximum entry of 48 players is already half-filled.  You have until Saturday noon to add your name to the list.  Wrong-bias insurance will be available -- three for $1.00.

CENTENNIAL PARK EVENT.
This Wednesday at 10:30am, the Rick Hanson Man-in-Motion totem pole (recently re-located to our park) will be dedicated at a special ceremony.  Rick Hanson will be in attendance; so a large crowd may gather.

This could affect our play in two ways.  First, parking could be an issue; so, if you plan to play that day, arrive early enough to get a spot.  Secondly, if enough of those playing wish to attend the ceremony, we can arrange to halt play at 10:30 for that purpose.

JIM LEE TOURNAMENT.
Last weekend twenty-four members participated in our annual Jim Lee Tournament.  Eight teams were randomly drawn and played a complete round robin over the two days.  At the end of play, two teams were tied; but, by virtue of the head-to-head victory, the Tommy Traynor / Jim Appleton / Mike Hanson threesome was awarded the trophy.  Finishing second were the Ross Bulley (Marvin Thorgeirson and Alice Trueman) team and Betty Locke (Mark Trueman and etcetera) was third.  (The third player, etc., comprised Maria Ridewood and Mary Nelson for two games each, and Bruce Watson for three.  Being one player short for the tournament required the creation of a composite person!)

Thank you, Arlene Jaskow, for the Jim Lee candid shots!

SIDNEY LAWN BOWLING CLUB EXCHANGE.
On Wednesday, eight mixed triples teams journeyed to Sidney for our annual inter-club competition.   This is the twelfth consecutive year that we have exchanged visits for this friendly rivalry.  No record is kept of the winners, although a trophy exchanges hands each time we meet.  We have to admit to defeat in 2010, with Sidney having nine wins to our five (with two games tied).

The weather looked seriously in doubt as we journeyed to the Saanich Peninsula.  However, in spite of experiencing a wide range of climates and not quite enough rain to get wet,  it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.  We look forward to their visit to our club in 2011.

Thank you, Mike Hanson, for these photos.

LADIES' 2-BOWL 6-PACK TOURNAMENT.
Members are reminded that the green will not be available for regular play on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 15 and 16.  Plan, however, to visit the green to watch excellent bowling by teams from both the Greater Victoria area and several clubs from up-island.  Three teams from our club will be participating along with our visiting competitors.

Tuesday Evening Pairs players are reminded that no draw is scheduled for the evening of June15.

UPDATE FOR MAY 8

UPDATES.  Betty and Duncan Locke will be absent from the green from May 11 through May 26; so the next update will be on May 28.

2009 TURNEY TWOS.
Tournament play was held on Wednesday and Friday of this week.  Ten teams, each consisting of a 2009 novice and a partner with slightly more experience, competed for the Turney Twos Trophy.  Preliminary play resulted in four teams qualifying for the semi-finals -- Pat Unger & Alice Trueman vs Dorothy Hanson & Mildred Butler & Janet Gardner & Marilyn Boechler vs Mary Nelson & Mike Hanson.  The Unger/Trueman and the Gardner/Boechler teams advanced to the final with Janet and Marilyn emerging as "last year's" champions.  All players seemed to enjoy both their games and the tournament format.  Our well-seasoned members had better watch out for these newer people, as spectators witnessed some excellent bowling.

Both days included an information and coaching session wherein Ross Bulley educated the players as to  protocol and nuances for tournament play (which, of course, was new to many of them).  Some aspects covered were procedures for practice bowls, keeping a scorecard, the use of the umpire, when to communicate between mat and head, and where and where not to be when not in possession of mat and head.

The games chairs are most appreciative of assistance from kitchen helpers, umpire/coach Ross Bulley, and especially Ray and Millie Turney who presented their trophy after viewing the final game.

EVENING PLAY.
Due to your games chairs' absence May 11 through May 26, evening play will be affected in several ways.  Please note the following:
1.  Ross Bulley will coordinate pairs' spares for this period.  To request a replacement player, please call him, at least a day in advance -- 250-246-9958.
2.  Mark Trueman will be the starter for pairs games.  He will also distribute and collect score cards.
3.  Ross Bulley will be the starter and timer for singles, and will distribute and collect the cards.

PRE-REGISTRATION FOR SPECIAL EVENTS.
Several club events require pre-registration.  Be sure to add your name to the sign-up sheets for:
1.  Victoria Day Jitney.  Monday, May 24.
2.  Jim Lee Tournament.  Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30.  This event is open to all members.  Triples teams are randomly drawn.  Maximum registration:  48 players.
3.  Sidney Exchange.  Wednesday, June 2.  Note that a CLBC board motion has directed the games chairs to select participants (should registration exceed the maximum of 24 players) by lottery.  This introduces the possibility of a husband and wife not both being on the final list.
4.  2-Bowl 6-Pack.  Tuesday and Wednesday, June 15 and 16.  Women interested in playing in this event must register teams by May 24.  If four or more teams sign up, a playoff will be held to determine the three CLBC representatives for this tournament.

UPDATE FOR APRIL 29 -- SEASON OPENING NEWS

OPENING DAY.  Even though the club has been very active already, the 2010 bowling season does not start, officially, until this Saturday (May 1) at 11:00am when regular Saturday play begins  -- eight ends of play before a lunch break (be sure to bring your brown bag for noon) followed by the final six ends of the match.  Last year many enjoyed changing positions after the lunch break; so we will continue with that at least for the first part of the season.

MEMBERSHIPS.  Even those who have yet to renew memberships for 2010 are welcome on Saturday!  Fees, however, must be paid by May 31.  Should you wish to pay on Saturday, someone will be happy to issue a receipt, and, of course, post-dated cheques are always welcome.

OPEN HOUSE.  Last Sunday's open house was a great success.  Many visitors showed up, as did members to play while our guests were shown the rudiments of the game.  As a result, we already have several new members.  Coaching of prospective members has continued through this week, and next week we will welcome even more who are new to the game.

EVENING PAIRS.  The evening pairs league begins on Tuesday, May 4 at 6:00pm.  Because registration was not capped, the season will be extended through September.  As in previous years, pairs teams will still play eight games in both the spring and summer sessions.  However, because not all can play each week each team will have two byes.  Because of this teams will not be drawn prior to the first evening of play.  Instead, teams will be formed at Opening Day during the lunch break.  Participants unable to be there will be advised of their team-mate and whether they play the first evening or not.

EVENING SINGLES.  The evening singles league begins on Thursday, May 6 at 6:00pm.  As with pairs, registration was not capped; so the season will be extended through September and each player will have a number of byes.  Because it will be a complete round robin this year, the draw will be made in advance and those who do not play on opening night will be advised prior to the first draw.

TURNEY TWOS.   The 2009 Turney Twos tournament (postponed from last fall) will be held on Wednesday and Friday (May 5 and 7) next week.  Ten pairs teams will be participating.  The competition will use four or five rinks; so the remaining rinks will be available for regular play.

2-BOWL 6-PACK.  This women's tournament is the only CLBC tournament open to teams from outside our club.  It is very popular with bowlers from both Victoria and up-island.  Our format reserves three spots for teams from our club.  A registration sheet (by full team only) will be posted in the club next week.  Should more than three teams register, a playoff will be held to determine the three to compete.  Betty Locke (Women's Games Chair) can provide further information, if needed.

MEMBER SUPPORT.   Members who perform the various duties to keep our club operational will begin in full force next week with a variety of responsibilities -- grass cutting, gardening, opening, clubhouse (kitchen and cleaning).  The board appreciates the contribution of each and every one of these members.  If everyone does a little, a lot can be accomplished.

SMILE CARDS.  The Smile Cards program is finished on May 1, but we are reapplying; so members should keep their cards and continue to use them. The total earned to date is $369.75 which enabled the club to purchase one set of bowls for the Junior Program.  If you don't yet have a Smile Card, do get one from Joyce Gammie.

APRIL FOOL'S!

No fooling, another bowling season is about to begin; so here are reminders and information leading up to opening day which is scheduled for May 1.

SPRING GENERAL MEETING.  On March 18 close to sixty members gathered to consider new and unfinished business pertaining to the club's operation.  The general theme that emerged was that of volunteerism.  The executive and board members are pleased with the response to requests for assistance in all areas of club operation, and appreciation is extended to those who have committed to these tasks.  Those who have not yet decided where to offer their time may still do so.  The area of clubhouse upkeep is most in need.  It is hoped that all members (especially those who have not already accepted responsibilities) will come forward or at least be willing to should they be approached.

MEMBERSHIP PROTECTION POLICY.  At the same meeting, the membership ratified amendments to the existing policy, and the new wording is now included in Membership & Fees.

EVENING LEAGUES.  Registration began on March 18th for the Tuesday Evening Pairs and Thursday Evening Singles leagues.  Pairs is limited to 32 and singles to16.  While nearing capacity, both leagues have spaces still available.  Please contact Duncan Locke (duncanofduncan@shaw.ca or 250-748-6542) if you wish to participate.  Both leagues are described in Leagues & Jitneys.  Please note that several changes in format over last year have been introduced.

GAMES BOOK.  By motion at last October's general meeting, a committee was struck to investigate the establishment of a Games Book for the club.  The committee has devised this book which will be kept with other documents relating to club operation on the counter by the bulletin boards.  The book is a chronological listing of all club tournaments and competitions which involve trophies.  A description and as many details as available are included in each entry. (Committee chair, Duncan Locke, would like to thank committee members Irene White, Marilyn Boechler, Mark Trueman, and Betty Locke for their thoughtful efforts in compiling the book.)

NEW TROPHIES.  A change in Evening Pairs procedures awards a trophy for each half of the season.  These two trophies are being generously sponsored by Judith & David Lovell, June Barnes, Tom & Marilyn Clark, and Barbara & Reg Grainger.  They will be named for past presidents Joe Spencer and Gordon Washburn.  (The existing Pear Trophy will be awarded to the winner of a mixed pairs in-house tournament to be held in September.)

2010 MEMBERSHIPS.  While many did register at the meeting, those who have not yet done so are reminded that fees are due and payable (by May 31 at the latest).  Payment may be made at the Open House (Sunday, April 25 -- 11am-1pm) or by mail to:  CLBC, P.O. Box 733, Duncan, BC V9L 3Y1.

Those at the meeting were able to purchase a chance to win free fees -- the winner was Alice Trueman!

CALENDAR.  The master calendar for the club is posted on the bulletin board next to the playing boards.  Changes and additions are announced here and noted on the Club Calendar.  Don't forget that you can often find additional information by clicking on an item in the calendar.  Have a look at May, particularly, as much is happening early in the season!

TOURNAMENTS.  Included in Leagues & Jitneys is access to information regarding Vancouver Island and other BC Bowls tournaments.
